Knights Drop Florida Trip Opener to UMass-Dartmouth, 7-5

Davenport, FL – Grad student Caleb Doyle reached base in four of his five plate appearances, but the Clarkson University Baseball team opened its Florida trip with a 7-5 loss against UMass-Dartmouth on Friday night at Northeast Regional Park.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-2 on the season while UMass-Dartmouth stayed undefeated at 7-0. Clarkson plays a doubleheader against Brockport on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third. Jake Millich led off with a triple to right and then came home on a ground out to short by Doyle. An inning later, Clarkson scored two more runs. With two outs in the inning, Cam Jerrett reached on an infield single and scored on a double to center by Robert Whalen. CJ Cartier followed with a single to left to plate Whalen, putting the score at 3-0. The Knights added another run in the top of the fifth on a double to center by Colby Brouillette, which scored Doyle, but this time the Corsairs responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. One run came in on a bases loaded walk and a single from Brett Baker pushed across another.

Clarkson lost the lead in the bottom of the sixth as UMass-Dartmouth scored three runs. DJ Perron hit a solo home run and later Matt Tempone struck for a two-run homer, putting the tally at 5-4. The Corsairs picked up two key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, one on a wild pitch and another on an infield single. Clarkson loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but only one run would score on two infield groundouts.

Doyle went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and another driven in, and he also reached on a walk. Brouillette also drove in two runs. Nicholas Hofacker had a no-decision, allowing two earned runs and three hits while striking out five over five frames.
