Knights Fall in Conference Opener at Skidmore, 1-0

Saratoga Springs, NY – Although the team held advantages in most statistical categories, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in its Liberty League opener and ended up falling to Skidmore College 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore improved to 5-1-0 and 1-0-0. Clarkson will host Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon, its first home game in three weeks.

Clarkson had a handful of chances in the early going, as one shot was tipped wide and a soft header found the arms of Skidmore goalkeeper Claire Wolgast. Midway through the first, Angelina Fahrenkrug had two hard shots corralled by Wolgast just 40 seconds apart as the Knights continued to put pressure on Skidmore.

However, despite a 9-3 lead in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half, it was Skidmore that went to the locker room with the lead. Isabella Nevin picked up control about 10 yards from the top of the penalty area and seemed resigned to wait for help, but made a quick turn and burst to create some space and hit a grounder to the opposite post past Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio at 13:33.

Neither team had many strong chances on frame in the second half, though each team missed wide and high on some other shot opportunities. Clarkson finished with a 20-9 lead in shots overall (11-6 in the second half) and an 8-1 edge in corner kick chances. Molly DiCaprio stopped three shots for the Knights, while Claire Wolgast denied nine shots for the shutout for Skidmore.
