Knights Fall in Third Game of Series Versus Ithaca, 7-3

Ithaca, NY – Graduate student Michael Tito went 3-for-4 in the regular-season finale for the Clarkson University Baseball team, but the Golden Knights came up short in the third game of their series against Ithaca College, as the Bombers came away with a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights felt to 9-17 overall and 5-10 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca improved to 25-10 and 13-4. Clarkson faces Skidmore College next weekend in the qualifying round for the Liberty League Championships, with the winner of the three-game series advancing to the double elimination conference tournament.

The Bombers jumped out on top early with two runs in the first, one in the second, and three more in the fourth. Nicholas Cutaia singled in the first run and Matt Fabian drove in the second with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Louis Fabbo pushed the third run across with a sac fly of his own in the second inning. In the fourth, David Cifonelli drove in a pair with a single and later scored on a base hit from Fabbo to put the Bombers up 6-0.

Clarkson whittled away at the deficit in the later innings, picking up their first run in the sixth when Mike Nee doubled home Kent Wilson, and later scoring two in the seventh thanks to a ground-rule double from Caleb Doyle and then an RBI groundout by Wilson to put the score at 6-3. However, Ithaca tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and Clarkson was held scoreless in the final two frames.

Tito had three of Clarkson's 10 hits in the game, with Doyle and Wilson also recording two hits apiece. For Ithaca, Cifonelli was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Fabbo was 2-for-2 with two RBI, and Riley Brawdy was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Collin Leyner picked up the win for Ithaca, allowing a single earned run in six innings of work and striking out six in that time.
