Knights Fall in Regular-Season Finale, 17-12 at RPI

Troy, NY – Down 4-0 in the first six minutes on Saturday, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team could never quite complete its comeback bid against Rensselaer, falling in the Liberty League regular-season finale 17-12.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-5 on the season and 5-5 in league contests, while RPI edged upward to 11-4 and 7-3. Clarkson qualified for the Liberty League postseason and will either head back to RPI or will travel to Ithaca for its first round conference playoff game.

The Engineers scored four times in the first six minutes, with Megan Shay accounting for two of the goals in the early going, but Clarkson eventually got started on offense when Madelynn Barnum tallied at the 6:04 mark. RPI edged out to a five-goal lead a few minutes later, but a Lauren Meyers score in the final minute put the tally at 6-2 through 15 minutes.

RPI picked up a goal in its advantage in the second quarter and then gained one more in the third, pushing the margin to six (13-7) through three quarters, but Clarkson made a comeback down the stretch in the fourth. The Knights found the back of the net four times in a seven-minute stretch, with freshman Chrissy Benedict scoring twice, to climb back within four (16-12) with four minutes remaining. However, that was the last goal for the Knights and Sabrina Torcellini scored with 2:37 to go to ice the game.

Three different players accounted for four points, including Hailey Millington (3-1-4), Madelynn Barnum (3-1-4), and Sydney Roderick (1-3-4). Barnum also added in four groundballs and five draw controls. Mia Petrone scored two points and contributed five draws, and Benedict scored two goals. Sydney Christiansen also stopped 10 shots in the Clarkson crease. Roderick's third point of the game, a goal at the 11:06 mark of the fourth, was the 200th of her career, making her just the fourth player in program history to reach that figure.

For RPI, Megan Shay scored seven goals and added four draws and Sabrina Torcellini had five points on four goals and an assist. Lauren DeLeo scored four points on two goals and two assists and also caused two turnovers, and Christina Rogers grabbed eight draws. Jenny Canfield made 12 saves for the Engineers.

RPI finished with narrow leads in shots (39-34) and shots on goal (27-24), but had a 21-12 advantage in draw controls, while Clarkson had a modest advantage in groundballs (13-12).
