Knights Take Two From SLU, 12-2 and 5-2

Potsdam, NY – Offensive outbursts at the right time helped the Clarkson University Baseball team score a pair of victories against St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights took two against the Saints, 12-2 and 5-2, in Liberty League action at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in the Liberty League, while the Saints saw their record evened at 13-13 and fell to 4-10 in conference games. The two teams will meet for the final game of the series in Canton on Sunday afternoon.

Clarkson pounded out 17 hits in game one of the doubleheader, scoring a run in six of eight innings. St. Lawrence scored one in the first, but the Knights had two in the bottom half of the inning as Kent Wilson doubled in Caleb Doyle and Mike Nee doubled in another run. Clarkson tacked on a run in the bottom of the second when Michael Tito scored on an error, and Zachary Carpin's double in the third returned the lead to two after the Saints scored one in the top half of the inning.

Clarkson began to blow the game open in the middle innings as the Knights tallied three in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Doyle, Wilson, and Colby Brouillette each drove in runs in the bottom half of the fifth, while Tommy Bianchi, Tito, Doyle, and Brouillette had RBI in the sixth. Joe Pagano scored on a wild pitch in the seventh for an additional insurance run.

Nicholas Hofacker picked up the win by tossing six innings of four-hit ball and striking out six. Griffin Tubbs pitched two scoreless frames of relief and Brett Porter also pitch an inning of scoreless ball. Seven starters had multi-hit games for the Knights, led by Pagano, who was 3-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored, and Brouillette, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI. Tito also had a pair of hits and scored three runs, while Nee had two hits, two runs, two RBI, and two walks.

Game two was quieter on the offensive front, though the Saints did score in their first at bat again. Jake Delaney delivered an RBI single in the first to give the visitors a 1-0 lead early. In the bottom of the third, Clarkson tied things up with a single from Doyle, which plated Carpin. The game remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth, when the Saints scored in a seemingly unlikely way. Mike Goretti hustled hard out of the box on a blooper to right-center and reached second base with a double. However, the next two hitters, in an attempt to move Goretti to third, popped up sacrifice bunt attempts, with Nee catching one at the plate and Tito making a diving play in foul territory for the second out. Goretti then advanced to third on a balk, and was able to score on an error when Doyle rushed his way through a play at short when trying to throw out Chris Watson.

The miscues in the top half of the sixth did not matter in the end as Clarkson scored four in the bottom half of the frame. Though the first two hitters were quickly retired, Mike Nee drew a full-count walk to keep the inning alive. Joe Pagano took advantage with a two-run homer to left that just cleared the piping down the line, putting the Knights up 3-2. Clarkson was not done, however, as Sean Eddington was hit by a pitch and Tommy Bianchi followed with a double to deep right-center. Carpin then singled to left to plate Bianchi for an extra insurance run.

Griffin Tubbs came on in the seventh to earn the save, scattering two hits around a pop up to second and two harmless fly outs to right.

Kyle Locklear struck out eight in 4.2 innings and Derrick Lewis came on to pick up the win in relief before Tubbs threw a scoreless seventh. Andrew Matthews took the loss for St. Lawrence, giving up five earned runs on six hits and three walks in six frames. Both Doyle and Carpin had multi-hit games for the second time on the day.
