Vaccaro Homers, Zoeller Strikes Out 13, But Knights Fall Twice to RPI

Troy, NY – With only three hits in 14 innings, the Clarkson University Softball team's offense was fairly quiet against Rensselaer in Wednesday's Liberty League makeup, as the Golden Knights fell 2-0 and 6-2 against the Engineers.

Clarkson saw its record dip below .500 overall at 11-12 while also dropping to 2-5 in conference games. The Engineers moved to 18-14 overall and 5-3. The Green and Gold will head to Rochester this weekend for four more league contests, playing University of Rochester and RIT in a pair of doubleheaders.

In the opener, Clarkson's Olivia Zoeller was mowing through the RPI lineup her first time through, striking out eight of the first nine hitters she faced, with the only hitter avoiding the result being hit by a pitch. However, a couple of bloop singles in the fourth allowed the Engineers to push a run across. Catherine Worthington dropped a flare into shallow center to lead off the fourth and then advanced on a sac bunt and wild pitch. Liz Vizzini then lifted a soft shot barely over the infield to send Worthington in for a 1-0 RPI lead.

The next inning saw RPI pick up another run as Chloe Lewandowski's base hit dropped just in front of the left fielder to start the inning. After a steal and a wild pitch, Lewandowski was able to score on a sacrifice fly to deep center for the Engineers' second run.

That was all that Erika Holowka would need for RPI, as she allowed just a single hit in the contest, a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh to Kayla Robert. The only other time Holowka was in danger was when she allowed walks to Zoeller and Robert in the first.

Zoeller took the loss, striking out 13 and giving up just one walk and four hits over seven innings. Holowka fanned 10 and gave up only one hit and a pair of walks in seven frames.

The second game saw instance offense for RPI as the team scored three runs in its first at bat of the game, as each of the first three hitters reached and later scored without the ball leaving the infield. Jessica Torch singled to shortstop, Worthington reached on an error, and Erin Askins got on first thanks to a fielder's choice without an out being recorded. Only Alex Ledger's hit through the left side actually made it to the outfield, as she drove in the third run of the frame. RPI added a fourth run in the fourth inning when Mikayla O'Neill hit a solo home run.

In the sixth, Clarkson was able to score its first runs of the doubleheader. Sam Short reached on a fielding error and Sarah Vaccaro followed with her sixth home run of the season (tying her for the conference lead), hitting a drive over the left field fence to put the score at 4-2. The Engineers got the runs back in the next half inning, however, as Alex Ledger doubled in a pair. The Knights went down in order in the bottom half of the seventh to end the contest.

Alexis Cooke picked up the win for the Engineers, striking out eight and allowing four hits and two walks over seven innings. Devin Fitzpatrick was the losing pitcher for the Knights, giving up five hits over the first four innings with four strikeouts against no walks. Riley Page tossed the final three innings for Clarkson, striking out five and walking one while also giving up five hits.
