Knights Picks Up Ninth Win of the Season with 11-5 Victory Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – With two man-up goals in the second quarter, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team slowly separated itself from SUNY Potsdam as the Golden Knights concluded their non-league slate with an 11-5 victory over the crosstown rival Bears on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-1 on the season while the Bears saw their mark fall to 3-3 on the year. Clarkson now returns to Liberty League play, heading to Union College this weekend.

Both teams started off a little slow, seemingly feeling one another out to find shooting lanes. Clarkson did score in the opening three minutes, but was held scoreless for nearly 10 minutes as the Bears' Drew Rose converted twice in less than three minutes to put Potsdam up 2-1 early. Matt Reilly tied the game at the 3:00 minute mark and then assisted on an Andrew Kearney goal with five seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Clarkson the lead for good.

Thomas Fiebich scored unassisted at 9:44 while the Knights were up a man, and late in the quarter Clarkson scored twice within a 40-second frame, as Connor Holly tallied at 1:38 and Sebastian Geiger added a man-up goal with just one minute to go in the half.

Clarkson wasn't able to extend its lead in the third quarter as each team tallied twice, but the Knights did step away from the Bears in the fourth. Bryan Penney scored at the 14:01 mark of the fourth and then Andrew Kearney ripped a shot past Potsdam goalie Ben Fuchs from in close at 8:16 to help Clarkson double-up the Bears. Geiger connected with Penney late in the contest for an insurance goal and Clarkson trotted out the shot clock late to pick up the win.

Geiger recorded four points on three goals and an assist and also caused two turnovers while picking up five groundballs overall. Fiebich added three points with a goal and two assists and Kearney scored three times. Matthew Hansen won 13 of his 17 face-off attempts and had nine groundballs, while Matt Szwagulinski was busy on defense, causing two turnovers and adding six groundballs.

Drew Rose scored two goals and Cam Talcott added a goal and an assist as well as three groundballs for the Bears. Ben Lagoner led the team with five groundballs overall.

Jacob Mattice denied 11 shots for the Knights and Ben Fuchs stopped 18 shots for Potsdam. Clarkson won the battle in shots (50-32), shots on goal (29-16), groundballs (36-25), and face-offs (13-4).
