Seventh-Ranked William Smith Sends Golden Knights to First Defeat of 2022

Potsdam, NY – Eight unanswered goals in the second quarter by seventh-ranked William Smith turned a tie game into a big deficit for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team and the Golden Knights were unable to overcome the gap in the second half as the Green and Gold suffered their first loss of 2022, a 15-4 Liberty League defeat at the hands of the Herons at Hantz Field.

Clarkson fell to 6-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference games and the Golden Knights will take on fourth-ranked Ithaca College on Saturday. William Smith heads to Canton to face 25th-ranked St. Lawrence.

Both goalies played well in the first quarter, making some impressive saves behind solid defenses. William Smith got on the scoreboard first near the midway point of the first from Payton McMahon and then added another on a free position shot by Maddie Montgomery at 2:54. Clarkson got its first score via a free position attempt at 1:30 to close the gap to 2-1.

Madelynn Barnum opened the second quarter with a score thanks to an extra-attacker, tying the contest at 2-2 at 14:37. However, five minutes later Katherine Murray scored, beginning a run of four goals in a two minute stretch and eight scores in just over nine minutes.

The third quarter was much quieter compared to the second, as both teams combined for just seven shots, but William Smith nevertheless was able to extend its lead. By the 7:02 mark, William Smith had pushed its advantage to 10 goals, creating a running clock, which went on for close to the remainder of the period. Madelynn Barnum converted on a free position shot with 25 seconds left in the period to stop the clock briefly, but less than a minute into the fourth the Herons again scored and the clock kept on rolling for the rest of the contest.

William Smith led in shots (30-17), shots on goal (24-14), groundballs (20-15), and draw controls (14-9).

Madelynn Barnum scored twice for the Knights and Sydney Roderick added a goal and an assist, while Grace Graney scored once. Julia Lavarnway snagged three groundballs and Grace Hagberg won four draw controls. Megan McCoskey caused three turnovers for the Knights. Sydney Christiansen stopped five shots in 45 minutes in the crease and Laura Wing made four saves in the fourth quarter.

For William Smith, Anna Murphy scored six points on four goals and two assists and Allie McGinty also recorded six points with two goals and four assists.
