Clarkson's Offense Continues to Click in 19-5 Win Over Plattsburgh State

Potsdam, NY – Six goals in a stretch of seven minutes in the first quarter gave the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team a good-sized lead in the early going and the Golden Knights kept on scoring as the team picked another lopsided win with a 19-5 victory over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights remained undefeated at 8-0 on the year, while the Cardinals fell to 2-5. Clarkson opens conference play this weekend when it hosts Ithaca College.

Bryan Penney scored in the opening minute for the Knights, but the Green and Gold were kept relatively quiet for the next five minutes until Andrew Kearney converted at 9:20. That began a run of offense for Clarkson where five different goal scorers were represented, as only Kearney was a two-time scorer in the run. The stoppage at the end of the first did little to slow up Clarkson's offense, as Matt Reilly scored a man-up goal at the 14:32 mark of the second. Connor Holly also scored a man-up goal late in the quarter and Sebastian Geiger converted in the waning seconds, putting the Knights up 12-2 at the half.

Plattsburgh's defense stepped up in the third, specifically goaltender Christian Bassi, who made eight saves in the third. That kept the Knights off the scoreboard somewhat, as Clarkson only picked up three goals in third, but the Green and Gold tacked on four goals in the fourth quarter on just seven shots on goal to cruise to the win.

Penney scored four points with three goals and an assist to go along with five groundballs, while Thomas Fiebich notched four assists, adding to his conference leading total. Sebastian Geiger also scored three goals, while Holly added three points on two goals and an assist and Kearney scored a pair of goals. Matthew Hansen and Logan Wilkinson dominated on face-offs, winning 23 of 27 attempts at the 'x' with Hansen winning 16 with 15 groundballs and Wilkinson winning seven with five groundballs. Defensively, Connor Borchardt caused a pair of turnovers and added two groundballs.

Jacob Mattice, Henry O'Brien, and Matt Yonko combined to make nine saves for the Knights, with Mattice making five stops and O'Brien and Yonko each denying two shots. Plattsburgh's Christian Bassi was busy all afternoon and made 23 saves. Stephen Kane led Plattsburgh's offense with three goals.

Clarkson held significant advantages in virtually every category, outshooting Plattsburgh 67-21 (42-14 shots on goal) and holding a 51-22 advantage in groundballs.
