Big Second Quarter Gives Knights 17-7 Win at St. Michael's

Colchester, VT – A run of four straight goals to start the second period gave the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team a lead it would never relinquish, as the Golden Knights cruised to a 17-7 win over St. Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-0 on the young season, while St. Mike's dropped to 0-2. Clarkson will return home to face Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The two teams were essentially even for the opening quarter, but Clarkson scored five times in the second while also holding a 19-6 advantage in shots.

Bryan Penney got things going for the Knights in the second quarter when he scored twice in a span of 50 seconds, and KJ Sarni and Christian Canino added goals midway through the period to put the Knights up 6-2. Matt Reilly later scored on a man-up chance to put Clarkson up 7-3 close to halftime.

St. Mike's edged back to within three early in the third quarter, only to see the Knights all but put the game away in the waning moments of the period. Matt Reilly scored at the 5:05 mark to end St. Mike's small run, and KJ Sarni scored less than a minute later to put the advantage back to five goals. Reilly then found Sebastian Geiger in the final two minutes for an 11-5 lead through 45 minutes.

The teams traded goals at the start of the fourth, but in the final six-plus minutes, the Knights made things more lopsided as Connor Matthews converted three times down the stretch.

Connor Matthews finished with five goals, including four insurance scores in the fourth quarter, to lead the Knights' offense. Sebastian Geiger chipped in four points on three goals and an assist while also adding six groundballs, and Bryan Penney added three goals and five groundballs. Thomas Fiebich (0-3-3) and Matt Reilly (2-1-3) also had three points. Matthew Hansen led the team with nine groundballs and was 15-for-21 on face-offs. Max Hoffer was also busy with eight groundballs and three caused turnovers, tying for the team lead in the latter category with Mason Volley. Jacob Mattice made 11 saves in 56:44 and Matt Yonko denied one shot in the final three-plus minutes.

For St. Michael's, Drew Collins scored three times and added four groundballs and a caused turnover. Max Katavolos and Kyle Hirshom also each chipped in three points, with a goal and two assists apiece. Spencer Scardino made 19 saves in 53-plus minutes for St. Mike's.
