Knights Drop Pair to Franklin & Marshal

Winter Haven, FL – Two Sunday games saw two vastly different scoring outputs, but the Clarkson University Baseball team found itself on the short end of both games, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Franklin & Marshall, 5-1 and 15-11, at Chain O' Lakes Park in Florida.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-2 on the season and will get a day off before returning to play on Tuesday.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard first in the opener, pushing a run across in the second inning. Tommy Bianchi led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk. Bianchi then moved to third on a sac bunt and came home on an infield error to make the score 1-0. However, that was the lone run Clarkson could produce off Greg Nieskens, the Diplomats starter. Franklin & Marshall meanwhile scored four in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth. Bobby Falese doubled in two in the third and then drove in another in the fourth.

Caleb Doyle and Bianchi were the lone players for the Knights to record a hit against the Diplomats in the first game. Mateo Sarabia struck out three in three innings and Brett Porter whiffed five in three frames for the Knights.

After a fairly quiet first game, the bats were busy in the second contest as runs came in bunches. Franklin & Marshal scored four in the first thanks to two-run doubles from Steven Rizzo and Drew Butera, but the Knights responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Kyle Locklear. Bales doubled in a run in the top of the second to return the lead back to four for the Diplomats, only to see Clarkson score three in the bottom of the inning, with the big blow coming off the bat of Sean Eddington in the way of a two-run homer. Clarkson took the lead in the third on a bases loaded hit by pitch from Caleb Doyle and Eddington later scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-5.

Following a quiet fourth inning, both teams put up crooked numbers in the fifth and seventh inning, but the Diplomats' bats were stronger. Franklin & Marshal scored four in the top of the fifth and Colby Brouillette recorded a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the score to 9-8 in advantage of the visitors. The Diplomats appeared to put the game away for good in the seventh with six runs, including a three-run double from Falese, but the Knights did not go quietly in their final at bat. Robert Fratangelo drove in Doyle with a sac fly, Locklear singled in a run, and Cam Jerrett plated Brouillette with a groundout to put the score at 15-11. With a runner still in scoring position and two outs, however, the Knights day was ended with a final strikeout.

In the second game, Doyle reached base four times with a hit and three walks, scoring three times, and Kent Wilson had three hits in four at bats with a pair of runs. Brouillette drove in two runs and was 2-for-5, while Locklear drove in a pair with a 2-for-4 effort. Eddington also scored twice and drove in two.
