Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Reilly Provides Triple Overtime Winner To Lift Clarkson Past Geneseo

Geneseo, NY – A slow start and strong goalie performance seemed to have the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team headed to its first defeat of the season, but both the offense and defense stepped up in the final quarter plus plenty of overtime, as a Matt Reilly goal in triple overtime lifted the Golden Knights to a 9-8 victory against SUNY Geneseo on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 5-0 while Geneseo fell to 0-3. Clarkson now heads to Florida for games against Keene State and College of Wooster.

Though Thomas Fiebich scored the opening goal of the game just two minutes into the contest, it was Geneseo that would enjoy the lead for most of the contest. The Knights scored three times in a stretch of four minutes midway through the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead. In the second, Clarkson came back to tie the score thanks to goals from Sebastian Geiger, Andrew Kearney, and Christian Canino, but Geneseo had an answer with two goals in the final three minutes of the half.

Clarkson's offense remained quiet in the third quarter as goals from Kevin Cook and Sean Byrne put the Knights in a four-goal hole, 8-4, with a little less than seven minutes remaining in the period. Byrne's goal would be the last score for Geneseo, however, as Clarkson mounted what seemed to be an unlikely comeback.

Fiebich found KJ Sarni in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter for a pair of man-up goals, pulling the Green and Gold to within two. Kearney then drew Clarkson a goal closer at the 7:29 mark to make the score 8-7. The equalizer came off a pass from Fiebich, as the junior found his classmate Sebastian Geiger for a third man-up goal in the quarter at the 3:19 mark.

Both goalkeepers were on their game in the second half and overtime, as neither team could muster a score in either of the first two four-minute overtime periods. However, Matt Reilly broke the deadlock at the 3:11 mark of overtime period number three, sparking a celebration for the Clarkson bench.

Jacob Mattice stopped 14 shots for the Golden Knights, as he and the rest of the Clarkson defense held Geneseo scoreless for the final 30 minutes of the game. The tough-luck loser in terms of goalie records was Mark Pav, who denied 24 shots in Geneseo's crease, as his team was on the wrong end of a 57-35 margin in shots, including a 47-24 deficit after the end of the first quarter.

Sarni, Geiger, and Kearney each scored two goals for the Knights, but it was Fiebich who would lead the team on offense thanks to five points on a goal and four assists. Matt Szwagulinski caused four turnovers and scooped up four groundballs, with the latter number being matched by Bryan Penney and Max Hoffer.

Kevin Cook led Geneseo with five points, scoring four times and adding an assist. Sean Byrne, Drew Liguori, and Robert Boneillo each added two points. Trevor Bollinger also added four groundballs and caused four turnovers for the home team.
