Union Second Chances Send Knights to 74-60 Defeat

Potsdam, NY – Controlling the offensive glass in the third quarter Union College was able to flip a halftime deficit into a lead through three quarters against the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, and the Golden Knights were unable to sustain a comeback in a 74-60 defeat on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-13 in league games and 5-18 overall while Union was able to clinch a playoff spot with its ninth conference win and improved to 11-12 on the season. Clarkson will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when it faces Skidmore College.

At the start of the contest, Clarkson edged out to an early lead as Elaina Porter's two free throws at 5:50 put the Knights up by five. Clarkson held the lead for most of the quarter, though a late basket from Union's Anna Metcalf gave the Dutchwomen a one-point lead through 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, a Darby Leid layup-and-one put Union up by four in the early going, but Clarkson responded with a 9-0 run. Mariah Benavides hit a 3-pointer and Maddie Pratt's jumper from the corner capped off the run at the 5:21 mark. Though Union would briefly trim the margin to one, a Mariah Benavides 3-pointer in the final minute put Clarkson up by six.

Clarkson counted on its 6-for-6 showing from the free throw line and four 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes for its advantage. Union had just one free throw and one 3-pointer in the opening half.

Union took charge in the early going of the third quarter, opening the period on a 15-2 run. Most of the offense came from layups, and many of those were second opportunities as the Dutchwomen scored 13 points in the quarter on extra chances. Mariah Benavides kept Clarkson close with back-to-back 3-pointers, and a Ruthie Nolan 3-pointer at the buzzer had the Knights down by just four through 30 minutes.

Clarkson was within three in the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws from Lauryn Withrow, but Union ended the game on a 12-1 run over the final five minutes. Darby Leid had a big make on a 3-pointer after an offensive rebound from Megan Lee and Lee followed with a layup-and-one a minute later to all but ice the game.

Benavides had 15 points, all coming on 3-pointers, while Elaina Porter and Cassidy Dumont each chipped in 13 points for the Knights. For Union, four of five starters finished in double figures, led by Megan Lee's 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting.
