Knights Suffer Defeat at RPI, 80-53

Troy, NY – A slow start put the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team in an early hole against first-place Rensselaer, and the Golden Knights could never recover as the team suffered an 80-53 loss in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season mark fall to 5-18 overall and 2-14 in conference games, while RPI edge closer to the top seed in the Liberty League at 19-4 and 13-3. Clarkson will close out the season next weekend with a pair of home games against Union College and Skidmore College.

RPI got off to a hot start, scoring 16 points in the first five minutes of the contest. Meanwhile, the Knights had some trouble offensively, not scoring their second basket until the 12:19 mark when Jack Dalgety hit a 3-pointer. That began a modest run by Clarkson, as the Knights got within eight on two occasions, both coming on 3-pointers from Garret Delaney. However, after the second Delaney 3-pointer, RPI went on an 8-0 run to push its advantage to 16 with 2:50 remaining. The margin stuck around that number up until the half, when Blake Gearhart scored with eight seconds left to put the gap at 15 (37-22).

At the start of the second half, Clarkson got within 13 twice, only to see RPI have an answer each time. Chris Hulbert scored on a layup at the 14:21 mark to put the score at 47-34, but the Engineers responded with a 20-7 run, which included four 3-pointers from Will Fredericks. With just over seven minutes to go after the fourth make from Fredericks, RPI was able to cruise over the final few minutes to secure the win.

RPI shot better than 50% from the floor overall (30-for-57) and was even better when behind the arc at 57.1% (12-for-21).

Both Ryan Miles-Ferguson and Jack Dalgety scored nine points to lead the Knights. Miles-Ferguson also had nearly half of the team's 13 assists, recording six. For RPI, Jonny Angbazo scored a game-high 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Brian Kelly added 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, Fredericks was perfect from the field on five shots for 14 points, and Mason Memmelaar tossed in 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
