Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Fall In Overtime at Ithaca in Liberty League Semifinals

Ithaca, NY – For the second straight postseason game, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team needed extra time for a decision, but unfortunately for the sixth-seeded Golden Knights, number-two Ithaca was able to come up with the game-winning goal in overtime to best the Green and Gold 1-0 in the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-6-4 overall, while Ithaca edged forward to 12-3-3 and advanced to the conference championship match on Sunday.

The first half was fairly quiet with just eight total shots and only one on either frame coming from Ithaca. However, the Bombers had a few more chances in the second half. Ithaca attempted to create its chances from down near the end line or off corner kick chances, eventually getting a solid opportunity on a header midway through the second half which was stopped by a diving Molly DiCaprio. Clarkson had a chance a few minutes later when Maddie Lopol lofted a high shot from about 35 yards out, but the play was made by the Ithaca goalkeeper Claire Reader.

With about five minutes remaining, two shots nearly ended the scoreless tie when Megan Buttinger hit the far post and the rebound bounced out to Ally Stanton, but Stanton's attempt went wide. In the last minute, Ithaca had another chance on a direct kick, but the groundball attempt from Rosie Bostian was easily picked up by DiCaprio.

Ithaca got on the scoreboard about three minutes into overtime with the Bombers starting their offense from the other end on a goal kick. The ball found its way to midfield and was volleyed forward creating a bit of a breakaway. DiCaprio and another Clarkson defender came out to stop the progress, which did happen briefly, but Delaney Rutan maintained possession and did a quick turn, lofting the shot past DiCaprio and into the back of the net at 92:52.

Clarkson had a chance to tie the contest in the final minute of the first overtime when a direct kick was sent to the opposite side of the box. Arin Bates redirected the ball with a header, but the shot went just wide with 15 seconds left in the first extra session. Content with its one goal lead, the Bombers played defense for the second overtime period and held Clarkson to just a corner kick in the 105th minute, one that did not result in a shot.

Ithaca ended the contest with a 17-4 lead in shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal, though Clarkson had six corner kick chances to Ithaca's five. Molly DiCaprio made seven saves for the Knights, while Reader made one stop.
