Knights Come Up Short in Non-League Contest at Middlebury, 2-0

Middlebury, VT – The defense was strong in limiting the host team in its chance on goal in the early going, but the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team found itself on the losing end of a 2-0 decision at Middlebury College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 5-4-2 overall while Middlebury edged forward to 7-3-0. Clarkson returns home for a game on Saturday afternoon against fifth-ranked William Smith College.

Sophomore Molly DiCaprio made some diving saves in the early going to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard, going to her right near the post to kick an attempt away and later sprawling to her left to catch a low grounder. The Panthers had six shots on goal in the first half and 16 overall, but it wasn't until their last chance of the opening period that Middlebury was able to slip one past DiCaprio. After the sophomore goalkeeper blocked a shot away, the rebound went to the top of the box and then out wide near the corner to Ellie Bavier. The midfielder then sent a cross back to the opposite side, where Margaret Furman kicked in the short-hopped pass with only 22 seconds remaining in the half.

Clarkson was held without a shot in the first half, but the Knights had a few decent opportunities in the second, including an Emily Davis attempt from in close in the opening minutes of the second half that caused Sydney Poppinga to dive and smother the shot, keeping the Knights down a goal. DiCaprio continued her strong play to keep the margin at one, but the Panthers eventually scored again in the 76th minute. The Panthers picked up possession at midfield and Carolyn Days went down the left sideline with possession, waiting for an opening in the Knights' defense. One showed up and Days sent a cross through traffic, finding the foot of Emma Binks in stride from about eight yards out to put the score at 2-0 at 75:40.

Middlebury finished with a 26-6 lead in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, though those numbers were closer in the second half (10-6, 4-2). DiCaprio ended with eight saves and Poppinga made two stops for Middlebury.
