Clarkson Volleyball Posts Pair of Sweeps Over Bates and Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – A lengthy delay between matches did little to squash the Clarkson University Volleyball team's momentum or tenacity on offense, as the Golden Knights posted lopsided sweeps of both Bates College (25-10, 25-14, 25-14) and SUNY Potsdam (25-6, 25-12, 25-13) on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record improve to 14-9 with the two victories, while Bates fell to 5-14 after its match against Clarkson and the Bears dropped to 13-11. Clarkson closes out the regular-season next weekend when it hosts SUNY Geneseo on Friday and then plays Ithaca College on Saturday in a match that will likely decide home court advantage for the Liberty League Championship.

In the first match of the day, the Golden Knights came out strong and took advantage of some errors by Bates, building a 7-1 lead on four kills and three miscues by the Bobcats. The margin jumped to 10 (12-2) following a block from Allyson Treichel, and the Knights continued to expand their double-figure margin all the way to 19-5 on a kill from Kristin Werdine. Though the two teams were fairly even the rest of the way, Clarkson closed with a 25-10 victory, hitting .280 (10-3-25) with Treichel posting three kills on only five swings.

The second set saw the two teams exchange small runs. With Clarkson up 6-5, the Knights rattled off five straight points, including three kills from Treichel, forcing a timeout by Bates. The break worked as the Bobcats got back to within one at 14-13, but following a side out, Clarkson scored the next nine points to push the gap to 11 points with plenty of work coming from Tess Sorel up front as well as kills from Sara Galante. Clarkson's offense tweaked up to .350 in the second set (16-2-40) with Treichel earning four kills on four swings and Galante adding five kills.

In the third, the Knights built an early lead with five of the first six points, forcing Bates to take an early timeout before the set got out of hand. That slowed Clarkson's progress briefly, but the Knights' lead never dipped below four points in the set. The Green and Gold pushed the lead to nine on a solo block from Olivia Freer (15-6), but three Clarkson errors allowed Bates to get back into the game. That run would be halted quickly on kills from Tess Sorel and Emma Main, and the Knights cruised to the finish for the sweep.

Treichel finished with 10 kills on just 14 swings for a .714 hitting percentage, while Galante chipped in nine kills. Isabelle Crow had 27 assists and 10 digs, while Emma Baxter produced a team-best 18 digs for the second straight match. For Bates, Alyssa Lowther posted seven kills, Emma Eide had 15 assists and 13 digs, and Ellie Asada had 12 digs.

In the second match of the day, one that was delayed by 90 minutes due to long-running matches, Clarkson showed no rust whatsoever, hitting .500 on 13 kills against just two errors in 22 swings while also adding in four aces. Treichel continued to do damage, getting five kills on just six swings, while Emma Baxter had a pair of aces.

Clarkson's offense was not quite as robust in the second game, hitting below .200, but the team's defense showed up with six blocks and holding Potsdam to three kills against nine errors on 26 swings. The first 14 points were tight as Clarkson held just an 8-6 advantage, but a strong run of offense from Tess Sorel in the middle of the set expanded the advantage to double figures (19-9) and the Knights cruised to a 13-point win.

Clarkson and Potsdam played close for most of the third set, with the Knights leading by just four (17-13) after an attack error, but the Green and Gold rattled off the last eight points thanks to two kills from Treichel, two kills from Galante, and a pair of aces from Abigail Spector.

Treichel ended up with 10 kills again, hitting .571 (10-2-14), while Sorel hit .467 (9-2-15) and Galante hit .400 (8-2-15). Crow had 31 assists, Werdine notched 12 digs, and Baxter contributed 11 digs. For Potsdam, Jessica Ader had five kills and six digs.
