Clarkson Suffers From Early Shooting Woes and Falls to RPI 80-63

Potsdam, NY – A slow start in both the first and second halves put the Clarkson University Men's Basketball teams in some tough holes from which to recover, as Rensselaer earned an 80-63 win over the Golden Knights on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Green and Gold saw their record fall to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers improved to 10-1 and 4-0. Clarkson will look to bounce back against Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights struggled out of the gate and found themselves in an early 17-0 hole after the first seven minutes, shooting 0-for-8 from the floor with four turnovers in the first 12 possessions. Ryan Miles-Ferguson provided a scoring spark off the bench and hit a 3-pointer at the 12:56 mark to get things going, and the junior had seven of Clarkson's first 10 points by the midway point of the opening period. The Knights eventually got back into the game and were within six on two occasions, including a Jack Dalgety 3-pointer and a dunk from Teddy Fravel, but the Engineers responded with an 8-0 run to return the margin to double digits. In the final two and a half minutes of the half, RPI went on a 11-3 run to take a 20-point lead at the break.

RPI scored the first 11 points of the second half, doing so in just over four minutes, to push the margin to 31 and pretty much end any hopes of a Clarkson comeback. The lead expanded to as many as 32 on a few occasions, but the Knights began to chip away in the final eight minutes. With the benches emptied for the last three minutes, Clarkson began to make some shots from the perimeter and ended up trailing by 17.

In his first action of the second semester, Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 21 points in just 22 minutes, shooting 9-for-14 from the floor to go along with seven rebounds. Jack Dalgety and Garret Delaney then chipped in nine points each off the bench, and Blake Gearhart found his teammates for six assists.

For RPI, three starting upperclassmen did much of the damage as Patrick Mahoney dropped 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting, Dom Black had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Mason Memmelaar scored 16 on 6-for-10 shooting.
