Knights Win Second Straight Behind Goals from Hayashi and Root

Manchester, VT – Goals from Taro Hayashi and Ben Root, coming late in the first and second halves, respectively, helped lift the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over New England College Saturday evening at Applejack Stadium.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-3-2 overall and will open conference play at home next weekend when the team hosts Ithaca College. New England fell to 3-2 on the season.

Most of the first half saw the teams take shots from well out of true scoring range. Paolo Martino had a shot from the top of the box in the first minute that went wide and later on the Knights had a header by Josh Conklin denied, but all other shots from both squads were from 25 yards out or more.

Clarkson broke through in the waning moments of the first half as Logan Drake outmaneuvered a New England defender down the right side line and was able to send a cross square to Taro Hayashi on the opposite side. The junior transfer hit a medium-speed grounder into the left corner of the goal at the 43:16 mark of the first half to put the Knights up 1-0.

In the second half, the Knights had a pair of near misses that were denied by Robbie Ferguson with tipped saves near the post and the upper corner. Clarkson also had a three-on-two transition attempt with about 20 minutes to go, but James Nicholas just missed a one-timer at the six before the ball was cleared.

The ball changed possession for most of the next 10 minutes before a quick turn came off a punt from the New England goalkeeper. Ferguson's clear attempt ended up a few yards short of midfield where James Nicholas hit it forward with his right foot, 25 yards ahead to Ben Root. Root then dashed forward just inside the penalty area and was able to beat one defender and the goalkeeper with a hard shot off his right foot into the corner of the net.

Clarkson finished the game with a 12-5 edge in shots while the two teams finished tied in corner kick chances at 2-2. Bryan Benitez stopped one shot for the shutout while Robbie Ferguson recorded three saves.
