Potsdam, NY – It took some time to get the offense rolling, but once the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team got going it was difficult to stop, as the Golden Knights opened the 2021 campaign with a 3-0 victory over SUNY Canton Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights, 1-0-0, will next host New England College and Steven Institute of Technology on Saturday and Sunday in the North Country Classic.
The Green and Gold took 14 shots in the first half with seven on the frame, but just one snuck past SUNY Canton goalkeeper Skylar Williams midway through the first half. Alexis Billings was busy moving through the Canton defense when she found Angelina Fahrenkrug from about 18 yards out, and the junior forward delivered with a shot to the far corner to make it 1-0.
In the second half, SUNY Canton finally had one chance in the Clarkson end, but for the most part the Knights kept the ball in their offensive end with 24 more shots and 10 corner kick chances. However, it wasn't until the waning moments that Clarkson solved Williams again. Chloe Hodge hit a hard groundball past the Canton defense off a pass from Haley Archambault with a little over 10 minutes remaining, and just a few minutes later Sarah Kohls skipped a quick shot past Williams off a cross from Julia Cascone.
Clarkson held an overwhelming 38-1 edge in shots and a 19-0 advantage in corner kicks. Molly DiCaprio was called upon to make a single save to record her first collegiate shutout, while Williams was much busier for the Kangaroos, notching 16 saves.
