Knights Come Up Short at 17th-Ranked William Smith

April 9, 2021

Geneva, NY – Sticking with 17th-ranked William Smith throughout Friday's contest, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team just could not seem to get the equalizer when necessary to shift the momentum, falling 15-11 in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference games, while William Smith evened its overall mark at 3-3 and improved to 3-2 in the conference. The two teams will play once again on Saturday afternoon, this time at Clarkson's Hantz Field.

Late in the first half and twice early in the second half, the Golden Knights trailed by a single goal, but William Smith always seemed to have an answer. The Herons key came midway through the half when they turned a two-goal advantage into a five-goal margin. Despite a three-goal run in a span of just 66 seconds, the Knights could not overcome that significant a deficit.

Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Grace Hagberg and Madelynn Barnum in the early going, but William Smith responded with three straight goals and the Herons would never trail again. Twice in the first half Clarkson came back to tie the game, but the Herons scored two goals late, while a Grace Hagberg goal with 2:07 remaining drew the Knights back to within one at the half.

Barnum scored at 28:45 and Julia Lavarnway scored at 22:26 to pull Clarkson back within one on two separate occasions, but William Smith scored five of the next six goals over an 11-minute stretch to gain a 13-8 lead. Clarkson rallied with two goals from Kyrsten Stone and one more from Sydney Roderick beginning at the 8:22 mark and ending at the 7:16 point, but the Knights could not muster any more offense for the scoreboard and dropped a 15-11 decision to the Herons.

Roderick (2-3-5) and Barnum (3-2-5) tied for the team lead in points on Friday, while Stone contributed four points on three goals and an assist. Hagberg scored two first-half goals and also contributed three draws, a figure matched by Barnum. Emily Fischer made 16 saves in the crease for the Golden Knights.

For William Smith, Maddie Montgomery carried the load on offense with six goals and two assists for eight points. Ellie Burns, Anna Murphy, and Delia Lawver each chipped in two goals. Sadie Mapstone scooped up five groundballs, Ellen Arena caused four turnovers, and Mekayla Montgomery was busy with nine draws, three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
