The Clarkson Women's Hockey team fought back from a 2 goal deficit to force overtime, but ended up dropping the decision on a controversial call.
The Knights fell behind 1-0 after one period, when Jessica Poirier scored at the 3:04 mark of the first. Â
The Saints would extend their lead in the second when Julia Gosling and Poirier would score to put the Knights in a 3-0 hole. The Knights out shot the Saints 12-5 in the second and late in the period they were able to score as
Lauren Bernard's shot was tipped up and over the Saints goalie. Â
In the third, Clarkson pulled within a goal, when
Nicole Gosling scored at 4:46. The Knights again were outshooting the Saints by a 2-1 margin, and with the goalie pulled and on a power play, they tied the game when a scrum in front resulted in
Stephanie Markowski jamming the puck over the line with just :28 seconds left in regulation. Â
Overtime would see the Knights out shoot the Saints and have several shifts of extended pressure, but with a little under 7 minutes left, a Saints player lofted the puck into the air to relieve the pressure and on the ensuing play the puck rebounded off the end boards and scramble in front ended with the puck in the net for St. Lawrence. There was a lengthy review, to determine if the puck had hit any of the pipes or beams that hang in Appleton. The puck hitting the beam would have immediately been cause for a whistle to blow the play dead. The review did not overturn the goal, resulting in the end of the game. Â
Marie-Pier Coulombe finished with 7 saves and
Michelle Pasiechnyk made 12 saves in relief.Â
The Saints will move on to face Colgate who defeated Quinnipiac in the other semi-final tonight.
