CU Softball Preview - vs. SUNY Canton (3/30)

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the Clarkson University Softball team's doubleheader against SUNY Canton was moved up a day, as the Golden Knights have one more doubleheader before the team starts Liberty League play.

The Series: A few rainouts have kept the Knights and Kangaroos from meeting up in recent years. The last time the two teams met was in 2016 when Clarkson swept Canton 14-5 and 4-3. Overall, the Green and Gold are 6-2 since the program opened up play back in 2014.

Key Stats for Clarkson (3-3): Dating back to last year, junior Olivia Zoeller has allowed just one earned run in her past 34.2 innings of work, allowing that lone earned run against St. John Fisher last week. So far this season, Zoeller has 30 strikeouts in 18.2 innings while giving up nine hits and three walks. Her opponents' OPS is a miniscule .335, including a modest .159 slugging percentage. Classmate Kayla Robert also has a 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season and is hitting .611/.667/.833 with a team-best eight runs batted in. Maddie Brink (.500/.524/.722) and Sarah Vaccaro (.400/.429/.650) also are adding to Clarkson's potent middle of the order.

Key Stats for SUNY Canton (1-0): The Roos had one of their two games against St. Lawrence cancelled due to rain, making an abbreviated start to the 2021 season. Selena Tasli has served as an on-base machine for the Roos, posting a .554 OBP in the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined, including a .633 rate (with 13 runs scored in 30 plate appearances) last season. Jordan Knapp hit .462 in 26 plate appearances a year ago, and Mackenzie Currie also batted .346 in 28 plate appearances. Kayla Chavarri is the team's top pitcher, striking out six in four innings in her 2021 season-debut. She also has 81 strikeouts over 135.2 innings in 2019-2020.
