Potsdam, NY – Special teams delivered the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team a victory over Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Knights scored three man-down goals and limited the visitors to just one man-up goal despite nine opportunities in the Green and Gold's 16-8 victory at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-2 on the season and will head to Cortland on Tuesday for another non-league affair. The Golden Flyers fell to 0-3 on the season.

Nazareth jumped out to an early lead, but Bryan Penney was instrumental in the quick turnaround for Clarkson. Penney scored just 10 seconds after Nazareth's first goal, then scored with Clarkson down a player after a penalty, and the junior tallied one more time at the 9:58 mark to put Clarkson up 3-1. Pierce Currie followed with two more goals in the first quarter, but a very late goal allowed Nazareth to get back within three at the end of the first 15 minutes.

Penney scored two more goals in the second quarter as the two teams traded goals for most of the period, but Clarkson ended up with a modest 4-3 advantage in the second to help take a 9-5 advantage at the break.

Nazareth scored the first goal of the second half, but the biggest turning point came a few minutes later when Clarkson scored two man-down goals on the same penalty. Jay Considine scored at the 9:58 mark on a pass from Conor Bartlett, and Billy Bergan converted off an assist from Penney at 9:32 to put the Knights up 11-6. Two more goals, both assisted by Considine, gave the Knights a 13-6 lead through three quarters.

At the tail end of the fourth quarter, Pierce Currie scored twice (6:34, 2:53) to close out the game, with the second of his two goals in the final period pushing him to 100 career points.

Penney and Bartlett led the team with six points each, yet did it in opposite ways as Penney scored five goals with an assist and Bartlett scoring once but assisting on five other goals. Currie finished with four goals, Considine had three points on a goal and two assists, and Billy Bergan scored three times. Riley Holzman won 18 of 28 faceoffs and had six groundballs while Shane Boehmcke added five groundballs. Max Hoffer played well on both sides of the ball, recording two groundballs, causing two turnovers, and also assisting on a goal.

For Nazareth, Jeremy Jacob scored five points on three goals and two assists while Clifford Pollard added four points thanks to three goals and an assist.

Kevin Dyckman stopped 13 shots and scooped up five groundballs in the Clarkson crease, while at the other end David Walk and Carson Pickeral combined for eight saves.
