Potsdam, NY – Senior Joe Lucas knocked down timely 3-pointers to kick start the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's offense as the Golden Knights closed out the 2021 season with a 78-65 victory over SUNY Canton on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson improved to 6-3 on the season with the win, while SUNY Canton was playing its first official game after an exhibition win last week, falling to 0-1.

The Knights were busy from beyond the 3-point arc, taking 40 3-pointers with 15 makes spread out over the course of Thursday's contest. Lucas had the hot hand, making six of his 11 attempts.

Clarkson trailed in the early going, but the Knights started a 15-2 run with a Lucas 3-pointer and closed it out with a basket from Blake Gearhart to jump out to a 20-8 advantage early. Canton rallied plenty of times in the first half, and cut the deficit to six (29-23), only to see Lucas make two more 3-pointers and help the Knights to on a 10-0 run, capped off by a Gearhart steal and layup on the fast break.

Despite the double-digit margin at the end of the contest, Canton spent much of the second half challenging Clarkson's lead. The Kangaroos drew to within four at the 13:47 mark only to see Gearhart and Jason Phelps hit back-to-back 3-pointers. On a few other occasions, the lead narrowed to six, and fell all the way to five with just four minutes to go when Danny Santana converted a layup and free throw off the break to make the score 65-60. However, the biggest play of the game came in the final minutes, when the Knights led by just seven. After a missed shot and quick transition, Phelps maneuvered through traffic on the break and was awarded with a basket on a goaltend and then hit the ensuing free throw after the foul to put Clarkson up by double-digits once again, 72-62. In the final minutes, the Knights kept Canton at a safe distance thanks to 3-pointers from Chris Hulbert and Phelps.

Lucas led all Clarkson scorers with 18 points, shooting 6-for-14 overall, and was followed closely by Phelps, who had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Both Reese Swedberg and Chris Hulbert also chipped in 10 points.

For Canton, Santana had a game-high 21 points and Joseph Werner came off the bench to produce a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor.
