Maline Scores 23 in Win Over Bryant & Stratton

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Tess Maline scored 23 points off the bench, shooting 7-for-11 from beyond the 3-point arc, as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team ran away with an 82-49 victory over Bryant & Stratton (Syracuse) on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-3 on the season with the victory while the Bobcats dropped to 3-4 on the campaign. Clarkson will face St. Lawrence University on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday to close out the year.

Clarkson started off slow, making just one shot in its first six possessions, but midway through the first quarter Mariah Benavides came off the bench and hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Knights the lead. The Bobcats would tie the game at 10-10, but the Knights would never trail again.

In the second quarter, Clarkson began knocking down a few more 3-point opportunities, making four of its seven attempts from long-range to extend its modest advantage from the first break. Clarkson led by just six, 23-17, after a pair of free throws from Traynise Delaney but two quick 3-pointers from Tess Maline and Mariah Benavides gave the Knights a 12-point lead. Only a minute later, Maline knocked down another 3-pointer to put Clarkson up 15 and the Knights eventually headed into the locker room with a 17-point edge.

Despite shooting just 34.1% from the floor in the first half, the Knights were aided by plenty of additional chances thanks to 14 offensive rebounds and 11 turnovers by the Bobcats. On the other side of the ball, Clarkson turned it over just four times and allowed only six offensive rebounds.

The third quarter saw Clarkson pull away for good, scoring 29 points on 11-for-22 shooting, while the Bobcats could tally only 10, going 4-for-21 from the field. With the Clarkson bench emptied for the fourth quarter, the Knights still stuck even and held on for a 33-point win.

Maline scored 23 points 8-for-13 shooting in just 21 minutes and Mariah Benavides added in 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting. Lauren Bell grabbed 15 rebounds. For Bryant & Stratton, Traynise Delaney scored 20 and Samiyah Brown notched nine points and nine rebounds.
