Knights Come Up Short in Fourth Quarter in 16-10 Loss at St. John Fisher

Rochester, NY – Graduate student Pierce Currie and sophomore Sebastian Geiger each scored three goals, but the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team came on short against 14th-ranked St. John Fisher, 16-10, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 0-2 on the season, but will look to get in the win column this weekend when they return to the Rochester area to take on Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon. St. John Fisher moved to 2-0.

Unlike a few days ago when the Cardinals put Clarkson in a deep hole in the first quarter, the Green and Gold stuck even with St. John Fisher for most of Wednesday's contest. Clarkson held one-goal leads on three different occasions in the first quarter, including a 3-2 advantage when Currie converted off a pass from Conor Bartlett, but St. John Fisher scored six of the next seven goals to take an 8-4 lead early in the second quarter, including two goals just 10 seconds apart to force a Clarkson timeout. After the brief break, Clarkson rallied to score the final two goals of the first half to make the score 8-6.

Out of the halftime intermission, the Knights pulled to within one on a goal from Will Britton, but the Cardinals scored the final three goals of the quarter to regain their four-goal lead from the second. The fourth was more of the same as Clarkson was within two when Currie scored at 12:28, but St. John Fisher notched five of the final six goals of the game to keep the Knights at a safe distance.

Geiger scored three of Clarkson's first four goals of the game, while Currie tallied twice in the fourth quarter. Bartlett added three points with a goal and two assists and Jay Considine scored a goal and an assist to go along with three groundballs. Riley Holzman and Matt Szwagulinski each scooped up four groundballs for the Knights, and Kevin Dyckman stopped eight shots in the Clarkson crease.

For Fisher, Jacob Gallina had a team-best five points on two goals and three assists and Jordan DePetres found the back of the net four times. Joe Post won 18 of his 23 faceoff attempts and led the Cardinals with eight groundballs. Both Matt Jeffries and Kyle Rochester added six groundballs apiece, and Darin Eakins made 12 saves for St. John Fisher. The Cardinals held a narrow lead in shots, 38-34, but controlled the play on the ground with a 45-27 edge in groundballs.
