Knights Drop 67 in First Half to Run Away from NVU-Lyndon, 104-71

Lyndon, VT - Fifteen first-half 3-pointers highlighted an impressive opening 20 minutes where the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team pumped in 67 points as the Golden Knights cruised to a 33-point victory against NVU-Lyndon, 104-71.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory and will next take on the University of Rochester on March 7th. NVU-Lyndon dropped to 2-5 in 2021. Clarkson's 104 points were the most the team scored in regulation since the 2011-12 season when the Knights netted 106 against Rensselaer. Clarkson scored 105 points against St. Lawrence in the 2016-17 season, but that game required multiple overtime periods.

Junior Reese Swedberg dropped in a 3-pointer on the opening possession for the Knights, but it was Jason Phelps who had the hottest hand early, scoring 10 points in just over four minutes. He and Swedberg, who made two more 3-pointers in the first four minutes, combined to score the first 19 points for the Golden Knights as the team raced out to a 19-4 lead. The next player to get hot for Clarkson was Blake Gearhart, who tossed in three 3-pointers in a stretch of four minutes midway through the half to push Clarkson's advantage to 19. NVU-Lyndon was within 18 at the 6:20 mark, but the Knights scored 12 straight in less than two minutes, including back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman Frankie Rainville. It was all part of an onslaught that saw the Knights make 15 of their 22 3-point field goal attempts in the first half. The Hornets could not keep the pace as they shot only 2-for-14 from beyond the arc and trailed by 33 at the break.

Unsurprisingly, Clarkson was not able to keep up the frenetic scoring pace and struggled at the start of the second half with just three makes on 12 shots and three turnovers in the first six and a half minutes, allowing NVU-Lyndon to get back within 24. The Knights broke out of their funk a little later and returned the advantage to beyond 30 when the team rattled off three quick layups in a stretch of just 42 seconds near the eight-minute mark of the half. From that point on, the Green and Gold steadily made their shots and surpassed the 100-point threshold for the second time in 2021.

Five players finished in double figures for the Golden Knights as 11 players scored at least one basket. Gearhart led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 7-for-9 from the floor, and added four steals, while Swedberg added 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Phelps scored all 14 of his points in the first half, going 4-for-5 from the floor, while Rainville tossed in 13 and Joe Lucas contributed 10. Clarkson ended up with 18 3-pointers in the game and 28 assists, with Nick Budesheim finding his teammates for five assists. The Hornets were led by Levi Haviland, who scored 12 points.
