Knights' Late Rally Comes Up Short at SLU, 65-59

Canton, NY – Junior Blake Gearhart had a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's effort against St. Lawrence University came up just short, falling 65-59 Wednesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-7 on the year and 0-3 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence improved to 6-1 and 2-1. Clarkson will close out the first semester with its first home game of the semester, taking on NVU-Lyndon at 12:00 noon on Sunday.

The Green and Gold started off slow, getting just a pair of makes from Teddy Fravel in the first eight minutes as Clarkson fell behind 15-4. Blake Gearhart broke the run and then Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer at the 10:29 mark for the Knights first make from distance to get the Clarkson offense going.

Although Clarkson was still behind by a dozen with just under seven minutes to go, the Knights chipped away at the deficit with a 3-pointer from Chris Hulbert at 5:53 and another by Frankie Rainville at 4:17. A layup from Hulbert at the 2:19 mark pulled Clarkson to within four, but Gavin Macaulay hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to push the margin back to seven at the break.

Fravel again was the top option for the Knights at the start of the second half, as he dropped in a dunk at 18:05 and hit a layup at 17:02 to get Clarkson within one. Blake Gearhart's layup at 12:52 tied the game and a 3-pointer from Gearhart at 11:54 gave Clarkson its first lead of the game. The Knights expanded that advantage to as many as four when Joe Lucas had a lay in at 10:30, but a few minutes later Aidan Macaulay hit a 3-pointer to help the Saints secure the lead once again. Gavin Macaulay then hit a 3-pointer with 5:58 remaining to put the gap at five points (56-51), but Clarkson would not go away. Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a layup at 2:24 and Fravel converted inside at 1:46 to place the Knights back by just two. Will Englehardt hit a jumper for the Saints at 1:19 to make it a two possession game, and Clarkson was quiet for the rest of the contest with a turnover and six misses down the stretch, including three 3-pointers that could not cut into the deficit.

Gearhart enjoyed his best game of the year with his second collegiate double-double and career-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (11). Fravel also had a career-best 17 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor for the Knights. For St. Lawrence, Trent Adamson nearly had a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds while Trey Syroka added 14 points, six assists, and three steals.
