Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Clarkson Volleyball Season Ends Against 10th-Ranked NYU

Hoboken, NJ – A 90-minute delay due to a leaking roof was survived by the Clarkson University Volleyball team, but the Golden Knights came up just short in each of their three sets against 10th-ranked New York University, falling to the Violets 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Hoboken Regional held at Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 20-10 on the season, while NYU improved to 28-1.

Each set saw NYU and the Knights seesaw back and forth, but when it got late the Violets found just a bit extra to close out Clarkson. In the first set, NYU rolled out to a five-point lead early by claiming eight of the first 11 points, but the Knights rallied behind Gillian Kurtic, who scored a combination of kills and blocks to tie the set near the midway point. Eventually the Knights pulled ahead thanks to a kill from Kristin Werdine, but three straight points from the Violets allowed NYU to get to 20 before Clarkson. Kurtic scored three kills late in the set to force NYU to take a timeout while on set point, but the Violets delivered a kill to end the threat.

The second set had its own twists and turns with a 90-minute delay occurring thanks to heavy rains in the New Jersey area causing a leak in Canavan Gym at Stevens. Prior to the delay it appeared as if NYU might make short work of the Knights as the Violets jumped out to a 13-5 lead. The Knights began coming back slowly and scored three straight points, capped by an ace from Abigail Spector, to make the score 16-12. However, it was at that point that the match was stopped as water began dripping on the playing surface. The bleachers were pushed in and the playing area was shifted to a side court to avoid the leak and play resumed, fittingly with another ace by Spector. Clarkson continued its run and took a two-point lead on back-to-back kills from Kurtic and Werdine, making the score 18-16. Again, though, NYU found a burst of offense, this time from Ella Spaethling, who dropped in three straight kills to reclaim the lead. The Violets would hold at least a two-point lead the rest of the way to close out Clarkson in the second set.

Game three had Clarkson win four of the first five points, but NYU quickly rallied and tied things up at 6-6. The Violets scored five of the next seven points to build a three-point advantage and they maintained a small advantage for the rest of the game. Clarkson challenged NYU frequently, getting to within a point five times, including at 24-23, but an attack error ended the match and the season for the Knights.

Gillian Kurtic was again dominant for Clarkson, scoring 17 kills and five total blocks while hitting .394 overall. Kristin Werdine contributed nine kills and nine digs and Allyson Treichel chipped in five kills. Isabelle Crow assisted on three blocks and led the offense with 30 assists, while Emma Baxter was the top defender with 15 digs.

For NYU, Haley Holz scored 12 kills, leading a diverse offense. Ella Spaethling added eight kills and both Abby Ausmus and Emily Kleck had six kills. Dominique Drust and Nicole Dao split setting duties with 21 and 16 assists, respectively, and Lindsey Hirano had 16 digs in the back row for the Violets.
