Knights Pick Up First Conference Win of 2021 Over St. Lawrence, 2-1

Canton, NY – For the fourth time in the past five meetings, overtime was needed between the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and St. Lawrence University, and the Golden Knights came away with a 2-1 win in the second extra session on Tuesday afternoon to claim their first Liberty League win of the 2021 campaign.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league play while the Saints fell to 4-3-2 and 1-2-1 in conference games. Clarkson will next travel to nationally-ranked William Smith College for a game on Saturday.

The game-winning goal came early in the second overtime as the sequence began in a seemingly innocuous manner after the Saints were called for a handball near midfield. Alexis Billings noticed Chloe Hodge open on the right wing and sent a quick pass her way before the Saints defense could set up, and Hodge took advantage by carrying the ball deep into the St. Lawrence defensive zone. Once down near the penalty area, Hodge attempted a cross, but the pass was blocked. No one else was able to pick up the ball near the end line before Hodge and she again sent the ball through traffic towards another Clarkson player on the opposite post. Before it could get there, the ball deflected off a St. Lawrence defender and crossed the goal line for an own goal in the 103rd minute.

After a relatively quiet 15-minute stretch in the middle of the first half, Clarkson was able to get on the scoreboard first. Hodge took a soft shot from roughly 15 yards away that was knocked down by a Saints' defender, but the deflection came right to the foot of Angelina Fahrenkrug just outside of the penalty area. She then launched a hard shot to the top of the goal just beyond the outstretched right hand of St. Lawrence goalkeeper Keely Snode at 37:14

St. Lawrence was able to tie the game midway through the second half, also taking advantage of an odd bounce like Clarkson had in the first half. After a quick clear outside of the box, Alyvia Ronning popped up a pass back into the box, which found the head of a Clarkson defender. Unfortunately for the Knights, Tyler Potter was able to volley the ball into the net before it hit the ground, one-timing a shot to the far post in the 64th minute.

Clarkson led in shots overall, 19-14, and also had a small advantage in shots on goal, 12-10. The Knights also had five corner kick chances, while the Saints had none. Molly DiCaprio made nine saves in the win for Clarkson and Keely Snode made 10 stops for St. Lawrence.
