Knights Drop Pair in Maryland

Salisbury, MD – After an opening day split, the Clarkson University Softball team suffered a sweep on the road, falling to Oneonta State in the opener (10-4) and then the host team Salisbury University in the nightcap (7-0) to close out the Golden Knights' trip to Maryland.

The Golden Knights, now 1-3 on the season, will be off from game play until the team's trip to Florida in mid-March, where the Green and Gold will play 12 games in seven days.

In Sunday's opener, Oneonta State used timely hitting while Clarkson struggled with runners in scoring position (1-for-10) to provide the difference. The Red Dragons went 9-for-18 with runners in scoring slots on the bases, frequently using back-to-back hits for big innings.

Both teams went down in order in the first, but each put up crooked numbers in the second. Meaghan Raleigh drove in a run with a single in the top of the second and Bailey Schwark drove in another on a bases-loaded single. A sacrifice fly from Jade Meehan and single by Brooke Corbett pushed two more across for a 4-0 lead for the Red Dragons in the top of the second. Clarkson responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, doing so with just a single hit. Michele Winn was hit by a pitch and Kyrstin Messier singled to left-center to put runners on first and second. Kayla Robert then reached on an error, allowing Winn to come around. A passed ball sent Messier home and another error by Oneonta saw Robert scamper home to pull Clarkson within one run, 4-3.

In the top of the third Oneonta got a run back on a Meaghan Raleigh single to score Megan Palmatier. Clarkson had a chance to get some back in the bottom of the third with runners on the corners, but Kayla Robert's line drive to right found an outfielder's glove instead of empty grass.

Each team added a run in the fifth as Oneonta picked up one thanks to a run-scoring single from Amanda Sexton, and the Knights scored one with an RBI-groundout from Michele Winn. The Red Dragons put the game away in the sixth with a prolonged rally that saw several hits just out of the reach of Clarkson gloves. Caroline Koch and Gianna Giovann each plated one run with a double, while Amber Badillo scored a pair with her two-run double.

Sarah Vaccaro was 3-for-4 in the game while Kyrstin Messier added a pair of hits and a run scored. Olivia Zoeller accounted for Clarkson's sixth hit. Leah Allen took the loss, going five innings and striking out two. Riley Page finished off the contest, allowing a single earned run with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of work.

The top of Oneonta's lineup did the majority of the damage, accounting for nine of the 13 hits. Alyssa Bluethgen picked up the win, allowing four runs (all unearned) over six innings.

Game two was much closer than the final score would indicate. The Gulls picked up a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second and in the third Dakotah Fraley homered to center to put Salisbury up 2-0. Clarkson challenged in the top of the fourth when Kayla Robert doubled, but she was stranded in scoring position to keep the Knights off the board. Salisbury broke the game open with five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Clarkson went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the contest.

Danielle Whitham was 2-for-3 in the game while Hannah Bowen and Kayla Robert each added a hit. Olivia Zoeller struck out seven in six innings, but was saddled with the loss.
