Knights Comeback Falls Short at Hobart, 77-68

Geneva, NY – Trailing by 12 at the half, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team roared back in the second half to tie the game twice, but the Golden Knights could never take the next step to regain the lead, falling 77-68 to Hobart College in Liberty League play Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-14 and 5-9 in conference games while Hobart improved to 18-3 and 12-2 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will finish off its regular season road games next weekend when it takes on Ithaca College and Skidmore College.

Clarkson trailed by four points with just two minutes to go, but on its final four possessions the Knights went 0-for-3 from the floor with a turnover and were unable to make up that last bit of ground on the scoreboard.

The two teams went back and forth in the first half, but Hobart led for the most of the first 10 minutes of the contest. Clarkson found itself up by one (20-19) after a Chris Hulbert jumper and eventually edged up to a two-point lead when Ryan Miles-Ferguson nailed a shot at 7:44. However, Hobart would put on an offensive clinic down the stretch, scoring 16 points in the final four minutes of the half. Clarkson kept pace for a while, trailing by only three (39-36) with 2:38 to go, but while the Knights went scoreless in the final two minutes the Statesmen tacked on more to take a 48-36 lead into the locker room.

For as cold as the Knights were in the final two-plus minutes of the first half, the Green and Gold found a groove in the early minutes of the second half, scoring 13 points in three minutes to tie the game at 49-49. Five minutes later the two teams were still tied at 55-55, but the offense for both teams continued to sputter. A Jake Purdy layup at 7:42 made the deficit a single point (62-61) for the Knights, but Hobart made the Knights pay for fouls, going 4-for-4 on free throws in the next few minutes to take a seven-point lead. Chris Hulbert hit a 3-pointer from the wing with 3:35 remaining and then hit a pair of free throws at the 2:08 mark to keep Clarkson within four points, but those freebies were the last points of the game as Hobart tacked on some insurance tallies from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the game.

Roburt Welch finished with 15 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field with three 3-pointers, while adding in seven rebounds. Chris Hulbert scored 14 points and Ryan Miles-Ferguson contributed 12 points. Jake Purdy also had a solid line with eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

For Hobart, Jackson Meshanic shot 13-for-24 from the floor for a game-high 31 points while also snagging 13 rebounds. Tucker Lescoe was the only other player in double figures for Hobart, scoring 11 points to go along with five assists and four steals.
