Late 3-Pointers End Clarkson's Season, Union Tops Knights 93-85

Potsdam, NY – Mike Concannon hit two 3-pointers in a stretch of just 35 seconds late in the game, dashing the playoff hopes of the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as Union defeated the Golden Knights 93-85 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their season close at 8-17 overall and 6-12 in the Liberty League. Union swept the weekend, improving to 15-9 and 12-6.

With the game tied at 79-79, Concannon hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to put Union up three with 1:50 remaining. On the Dutchmen's next possession, he came off a screen at the top of the key and hit another 3-pointer with 1:15 to go, giving Union a six-point lead. Rhona Eseyade then blocked two shots as Clarkson was trying to get quick points in the paint, and Union made its free throws down the stretch for the win.

Chris Hulbert finished with 22 points on 6-for-13 shooting with four 3-pointers and Matt Higgins added 18 points on 7-for-16 shooting, also contributing three steals for Clarkson. Roburt Welch and Blake Gearhart also tossed in 13 points for the Knights. For Union, Kevin Jefferson scored 22 with four 3-pointers and Mike Concannon produced 21 points.

At the start of the game, Clarkson struggled to find a rhythm in the first few minutes, scoring just one basket in the first four-plus minutes. Union used that to its advantage, gaining an early eight-point lead. Clarkson would begin to force some turnovers and got back into the game thanks to the backcourt duo of Dante Joefield and Ryan Miles-Ferguson. The latter stole a ball right off a timeout and dunked with the left hand to draw Clarkson to within one, and the next possession Clarkson gained its first lead of the game when Roburt Welch converted in the lane. Union wrestled the lead right back and pushed its margin to as many as nine, but again Clarkson came back, eventually pulling to within one in the final minute when Blake Gearhart hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 50 seconds to go in the half.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson had nine points on 3-for-3 shooting in less than five minutes of play, while Matt Higgins added eight points and Barryn Shark tossed in six points to go along with a pair of assists. Union got 21 points off the bench from Andrew Laub (11) and Mike Manley (10).

The second half saw Clarkson claim the lead when Roburt Welch hit an early 3-pointer and Higgins converted inside to put the Knights up two. Clarkson would, for the most part, hold on to the advantage for the next few minutes, extending its lead to as many as six when Higgins hit a 3-pointer at the 11:35 mark, making the score 61-55. That lead evaporated in the next three minutes, but Clarkson still found itself up by three on a Higgins dunk in the lane and a minute later when Welch converted inside. Four straight free throws a few minutes later from Concannon gave Union a two-point lead, but Higgins made two free throws to tie the game at 79-79 with 3:35 to go.

After Concannon made his two 3-pointers, Clarkson dropped behind by as many as 10 points. However, a 3-pointer from Blake Gearhart and three free throws from Hulbert narrowed the gap to four. With time winding down in the final 30 seconds, however, Clarkson would not score again and the Dutchmen extended the gap back to eight.

Each team hit 11 3-pointers, and both shot over 50% from the floor, but Union was 30-for-32 from the free throw line while Clarkson was just 12-for-15 from the stripe.
