Clarkson Remains in Playoff Hunt with 74-63 Win at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – With playoff hopes diminishing, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team recorded one of its biggest wins of the season to get right back into the thick of the race as the Golden Knights earned a much-needed victory against Skidmore College, downing the Thoroughbreds 74-63 on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved moved the Golden Knights to 8-15 overall and 6-10 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore dropped to 7-16 and 6-10. The win by Clarkson and loss by Skidmore, coupled by losses from Vassar and St. Lawrence, creates a four-way tie for fifth in the Liberty League.

Although Clarkson never trailed against Skidmore on Saturday, there were several times that its lead was in doubt. The Knights jumped out in front by a score of 15-6 thanks to a six-point run in 70 seconds, with five of those tallies coming from the hand of Matt Higgins. Clarkson steadily increased its lead in the first half, jumping out to a 13-point advantage (27-14) after two free throws from Higgins. The lead edged back up another point on a make by Chris Hulbert at the 3:27 mark (33-19), but the Knights went quiet for the next three minutes, allowing Skidmore to get back within eight. However, a layup from Reese Swedberg and a late steal and fast break lay in by Barryn Shark returned the margin to 12 at the half.

Little went right on offense for Skidmore in the first half, as the Thoroughbreds shot 11-for-38 overall, missing all 12 of their 3-point attempts.

Swedberg buried an early 3-pointer to make it 40-29, but Skidmore responded with eight straight points as the Knights went 0-for-6 with three turnovers in that stretch. A Roburt Welch layup and free throw sparked a new rally for the Knights, especially when Joe Lucas and Welch hit back-to-back 3-pointers, forcing Skidmore to take a timeout down 53-41 with just under 10 minutes to go. The margin hovered in the low double digits for the next seven minutes, going from as few as 10 to as many as 13. Skidmore finally edged back to under 10 thanks to a pair of free throws from Pat Gallagher at the 2:37 mark, but nine was as close as the Thoroughbreds would get as Clarkson hit enough free throws to comfortably close out the game.

Matt Higgins led Clarkson in scoring for the second straight day, producing 15 points. Reese Swedberg tallied his seventh double-double of the year thanks to 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Joe Lucas was a model of efficiency, scoring 13 points on two 3-pointers and a 7-for-8 effort from the free throw line. Roburt Welch also chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.

For Skidmore, Ty Lamport and Tautvydas Kupstas each scored 17 points. Skidmore finished just 1-for-15 from beyond the 3-point arc.
