Knights Nearly Flawless From Line in 87-73 Win Over Bard

Potsdam, NY – Uncharacteristically foregoing shots at the 3-point line, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team went to the basket regularly and made 24 of 27 free throws to earn an 87-73 victory over Bard College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the Liberty League, while the Raptors remained winless at 0-18 and 0-12. Clarkson hits the road next weekend to take on RIT and Hobart College.

Clarkson shot just 5-for-22 from beyond the 3-point arc and was just 1-for-13 in the first half from distance, but instead did its best to get in the lane on hard drives which often resulted in foul calls. The 27 free throws were the second most that Clarkson has taken all season and the 24 makes were easily the most of the season.

In the first few minutes, Bard was carried by freshman guard Elliot Harris, who scored 11 points in the early going but was whistled for a pair of fouls and had to leave the game. The two teams exchanged the lead for the next few moments, with Clarkson taking a four-point lead on a 6-0 run, capped by a Dante Joefield put back. However, the Raptors responded with five straight to regain the lead. Following a make by Stefanos Psarras at the 5:30 mark, Bard went cold from the field and the Golden Knights took advantage, going on a 12-0 run to end the period. Chris Hulbert initially tied the game with a three-point play on a layup and free throw at 5:17, and five minutes later Matt Higgins did the same to send the Green and Gold into the locker room with a nine-point margin.

Higgins finished with 10 first-half points, shooting 3-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line, while Hulbert tossed in nine points, mostly on 7-for-8 shooting from the line. Bard's production came primarily from two players as Harris had 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting and Psarras scored 10 points on 5-for-8 from the field.

The Knights pushed the margin to 13 points early in the second half, but Psarras would not let the game get out of hand, scoring on short jumpers and getting to the basket to convert in traffic. A 3-pointer from the corner by Barryn Shark at the 6:50 mark edged Clarkson out to a 16-point advantage (70-54), but the game was far from over. Psarras hit a 3-pointer at the 5:21 mark to cut the gap to just eight points and a few minutes later it was down to six when Harris banged home a 3-pointer with 2:37 to go. Those were the last points for the Raptors, however, as Shark hit four free throws late to lift the Knights back to a double-digit win.

Clarkson saw three of its starters finish in double figures, led by Chris Hulbert's 21 points. Reese Swedberg and Matt Higgins each added 14 points. Barryn Shark produced nine points, five rebounds, and four assists and Blake Gearhart shot 4-for-6 from the floor for eight points. Gearhart also notched four steals.

For Bard, Stefanos Psarras had a good game just in the second half, scoring 23 of his game-high 33 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Elliot Harris also finished with 20 points and Tyler Bruns recorded 11 points before fouling out late in the contest.
