Higgins Scores 24 for Knights in Defeat Against RIT

Potsdam, NY – RIT made 20 free throws in the second half alone and those easy opportunities helped the Tigers upend the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team 90-85 in Liberty League action at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in the Liberty League while the Tigers moved to 6-10 and 3-6. Clarkson will travel to play Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University on Tuesday before returning for home games next weekend against Vassar College and Bard College.

RIT held a 34-17 edge in free throws overall, making 25 in the game, eight more makes than Clarkson attempted. Neither team did much on the offensive glass (14 total offensive rebounds) so those chances loomed large in the outcome.

RIT started off the game hot with a 100-plus point pace on 14 points in the first four minutes, but the Golden Knights' defense settled in to slow down the Tigers' offense. RIT led 14-6 very early and sent that margin to nine points on a layup plus-one by Kevin Ryan (17-8), but Clarkson began to draw back in thanks to 3-pointers from Joe Lucas, narrowing the gap to three (21-18). A pair of free throws by Dante Joefield and a slashing layup from Ryan Miles-Ferguson put Clarkson up 22-21, but the two teams exchanged the lead a few times in the next minutes. Eventually, Clarkson began to pull away on back-to-back 3-pointers from Matt Higgins and Roburt Welch, but the Tigers had a response of their own, including a rim rattling dunk by Cobey Adekanbi. Two free throws by Curtis Nesbitt got RIT back within one and it appeared that would be the gap at the break, but a late foul on a driving shot by Joefield gave Clarkson two free throws with time expired for a 42-39 lead at the break.

At the start of the second, RIT tied the game in the first few minutes thanks to free throws from Kevin Ryan, but Clarkson went on a run that gave them a nine-point lead (57-48) with eight points going to Reese Swedberg. The Tigers responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead, capped off by a 3-pointer from Curtis Nesbit. Though the Knights would reclaim the lead briefly on free throws by Chris Hulbert, the Tigers proved to be in control the rest of the way, holding at least a basket advantage for the remainder of the contest. RIT would push its lead to as many as eight, but Clarkson always had a response, including last minute 3-pointers by Roburt Welch and Chris Hulbert. Those makes were not quite enough to truly challenge the Tigers, as the visitors held on for a five-point win.

Matt Higgins scored 24 points, shooting 9-for-15 overall with three 3-pointers, while adding in seven rebounds. Reese Swedberg produced 18 points and snagged seven rebounds while both Ryan Miles-Ferguson (12 points) and Chris Hulbert (11 points) finished in double figures.

For RIT, Kevin Ryan shot 6-for-7 from the field and 9-for-14 from the free throw line for 21 points while Curtis Nesbit buried six 3-pointers for a team-high 24 points. Cobey Adekanbi added 17 on 7-for-9 shooting and Keegan Ocorr notched 14 points. RIT's starting five accounted for 82 of the team's 90 points.
