Higgins and Swedberg Combine for 38 in Clarkson Loss to Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – With 17 makes on 18 tries from the free throw line, Ithaca College pulled away late in the second half to earn a 101-87 victory over the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped their third straight Liberty League contest to fall to 4-10 overall and 2-5 in conference games, while Ithaca moved to 10-3 and 6-1. Clarkson will look to regroup when it hosts RIT and Hobart next weekend at Alumni Gym.

Ithaca shot 55.2% (16-for-29) from the field and 94.4% (17-for-18) from the free throw line in the second half, dwarfing Clarkson's free throw attempts by a large margin (18-2).

Clarkson went away from its usual 3-point bombing and instead focused on the inside game in the early going versus the Bombers as Reese Swedberg did an outstanding job of finishing off passes and getting to the free throw line. Overall, he finished with 16 points in the first half on 7-for-10 shooting. However, Ithaca's long-range shooting was able to turn an 11-point deficit (42-31) into a tie game (42-42) in less than two minutes thanks to 3-pointers from Cooper Macklin, Riley Thompson and Skylar Sinon. Although Clarkson was able to take the lead back on a Blake Gearhart drive, Ithaca scored the final six points of the half and went into the break with a 48-44 advantage.

Besides Swedberg's inside presence, Matt Higgins also went to the basket with regularity, scoring 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting with just a single 3-pointer. Ithaca's first-half scoring was more spread out with Jake Mitchell and Sebastian Alderete each scoring nine. Alderete also added five assists and four rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

Clarkson rallied to take the lead in the early moments of the second half, pushing its lead to three points when Reese Swedberg finished off a dunk on the fast break to make it 59-56 at 15:47. The Bombers immediately came back to gain the advantage, but the two teams still found themselves tied at 65-65 when Barryn Shark sliced his way through the lane to convert inside. Ithaca scored seven straight right after that Clarkson make for its biggest lead of the contest to that point and while the Knights eventually trimmed the margin to two they would never fully come back. Ithaca went on a 12-2 run to push the gap to double figures and while Clarkson briefly got back to within single digits, the Bombers made nine free throws without a miss in the final five minutes to keep themselves at a safe distance.

Both Higgins and Swedberg finished with 19 points to lead Clarkson, with the latter also grabbing 10 rebounds. Barryn Shark scored 16 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor, while both Chris Hulbert and Blake Gearhart scored 11 points.

For Ithaca, Skylar Sinon finished with 28 points, shooting 10-for-17 from the field, to go along with 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Riley Thompson tossed in 19 points, doing most of his damage from the free throw line with nine makes in 10 attempts. Jake Mitchell added 14 points and Sebastian Alderete scored 13 while Zach Warech contributed 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
