Clarkson vs St. Lawrence Women's Hockey This Weekend

The first games in the North Country since early December for Clarkson promise to be exciting as the Golden Knights take on archrival St. Lawrence in a home-and-home ECAC Hockey series. Clarkson hosts the Saints on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Cheel Arena and then will battle its Route 11 neighbors in the initial game at St. Lawrence's newly renovated Appleton Arena on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Both games can be viewed live streamed on ESPN+ (US) and StretchInternet (international).

Ranked 7th in the national polls, the Golden Knights, guided by 12th-year Head Coach Matt Desrosiers, who has recorded 301 career wins, and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, stand at 15-3-4 overall. The Green and Gold hold down fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-2-2 league mark. 

In its first game back after a 33-day layoff for exams and the holidays, Clarkson suffered a 5-2 loss to Yale in New Haven, CT on Friday, but bounced back with a convincing 6-0 victory over Brown in Providence, RI on Saturday.

• Clarkson leads the all-time series against St. Lawrence 29-19-7 and has won nine of the last 10 meetings.
• The Knights are 7-0-2 at home this season. Clarkson's last loss at Cheel Arena was a 4-3 overtime setback to Colgate on February 9. The Green and Gold have outscored their opponents 32-9 through nine games this season in Potsdam
• Offensively and defensively, the Green and Gold have been strong. Clarkson is ranked seventh in the nation defensively, allowing just 1.73 goals per game, while scoring 3.45 GPG (8th). 
• The Knights are ranked 13th on the power play (18.9%, 18-95) and 17th on the penalty kill (85.1%, 74-87).
• Two-time All-American Elizabeth Giguere shows no signs of slowing down in her junior campaign. The right wing is the nation's leading goal scorer with 22 tallies and ranks fifth in the country in points with 40. She has recorded points in 20 of 22 games and goals in 17. Giguere is working on a current 17-game point streak (19-15-34). Clarkson's second all-time leading scorer, she has amassed 184 points (75-109) through 103 games. Giguere is  29 points behind 2019 Patty Kazmaier winner Loren Gabel '19 on the Green and Gold's all-time scoring chart.
• Forward Gabrielle David leads the nation's rookies in scoring with 28 points including a NCAA-high 19 assists for freshmen.  She is tied for the second best plus/minus (+19) among rookies.
• Senior forward Kayla Friesen has tallied 13 points (4-9) over the last seven games and five goals and 12 assists over the past 11. The transfer from St. Cloud State has 25 points (10-15) through 17 games.
• Clarkson's Captain Ella Shelton has tallied 18 points (4-14) in 18 games from the blueline. She is moving closer to the century mark with 93 career points (21-72) through 138 games.
• Sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe ranks among the nation's best goaltenders with a 1.37 GAA (4th) and a .936 save percentage (7th) en route to an 13-3-3 record. She is is tied for fifth in the country for shutouts with four.
• Freshman defenseman Emily Wisnewski scored her first career goal and senior Katherine Beaumier recorded her career point (an assist) in Saturday's win at Brown.
• In its 17th season, Clarkson, a three-time National Champion (2014, 2017, 2018), posts a all-time record of 394-170-65.

Series St. Lawrence: Clarkson enters this weekend with a 29-19-7 edge over St. Lawrence in the all-time series. The Golden Knights are on a three-game win streak and are 9-1-2 in the last 12 games. The Knights and Saints have not opened their season series in the second semester since the 2008-09 season and it will be the first time since the 2009-10 season the teams have not played regular season non-conference games. The Knights won three of four games last season, outscoring the Saints 14-4 including a pair of shutouts. Clarkson has also been great at Cheel Arena against the Saints, going 18-3-6 against St. Lawrence, but the Knights are under .500 at Appleton (11-16-4). Elizabeth Giguere (19), Michaela Pejzlova (16), and Ella Shelton (12) all have double-digit points in their respective careers against St. Lawrence. Giguere leads the way with 10 goals against the Saints while Pejzlova and Shelton are tied with 10 assists apiece. None of Clarkson's goalies have faced off against St. Lawrence.

Scouting St. Lawrence: St. Lawrence enters the Route 11 rivalry with an 8-8-5 record overall and a 3-4-2 record in ECAC play resulting in an eighth-place standing near the midway point of the season. St. Lawrence will play their first home game at Appleton this Saturday after going 3-2-3 at the Roos House at SUNY Canton, and the Saints are 5-6-2 in road games in 2019-20. St. Lawrence was on a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) after beating Brown this past Friday but fell to Yale 2-1 on Saturday to end the streak. St. Lawrence is not only at .500 on the year but have a scoring margin of zero scoring 2.3 goals per game and giving up 2.3 goals against per game. Senior Kayla Vespa leads the team in goals with 11 and assists with 12. After Vespa, the Saints rely on an abundance of youth. Freshman Anna Segedi leads the first-year group with nine goals and eight assists so far and classmates Lucy Morgan and Caitlin Whitehead have been the primary goaltenders for St. Lawrence this season starting 19 of the team's 23 games. Morgan, who has been the go-to goalie, has played in 15 games and has a 4-5-5 record with a .937 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average. Whitehead has spelled Morgan in seven games and owns a 4-1-0 record with a .902 save percentage with a 2.14 goals against average.
