Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Open With 4-3 Win at Syracuse

updated with scoring changes (9/28)

A senior transfer made a big impression in her first appearance in a Clarkson University Women's Hockey jersey and the nation's leading scorer from last year continued her offensive ways to highlight the third-ranked Golden Knights' 4-3 season-opening victory over Syracuse in Central NY on Friday evening.

Forward Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN), and all-star at St. Cloud State the previous three seasons, scored twice for the Green and Gold and junior Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE), coming off a 73-point season last winter, tallied her sixth career shorthanded marker. Senior captain, defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersoll, ONT) rounded out the Clarkson scoring with the game's opening goal.

Sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE), making her fourth career start in goal, posted 29 saves, including several key third-period stops to gain the win.

It was a wild opening twenty minutes at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Clarkson got the game's first power play and used just seven seconds to connect on the man-advantage. Shelton fired in a blast from the point at 5:03 with blueline partner Stephanie Markowski (Edmonton, ALB) and Giguere assisting.

Syracuse's Kelli Roswell tied the game at 10:10 with a gorgeous outside, in move on the power play.

Giguere put the Knights back on top less than a minute later, at 11:06, scoring on a shorthanded breakaway for her 54th career goal and 146th career point.

Syracuse, however, would tie the game up before intermission with a Lindsay Eastwood slap shot through traffic at 14:09.

The Orange would manage the only score in the middle stanza, just 24 seconds in as Emma Polaski put a wrist shot under the right arm of Coulombe, giving the home team a 3-2 lead.

The Golden Knights used two scores by Friesen in a seven-minute span early in the third period to erase the one-goal deficit and gain their 11th all-time season-opening victory in 17 campaigns.

Friesen tallied her first Clarkson goal at 3:35. Freshman Gabrielle David (Drummondville, QUE) and senior Rhyen McGill (Whitby, ONT) assisted. An even seven minutes later, it was Friesen again, potting home a rebound to give the Green and Gold a 4-3 lead. McGill and David recorded the assists.

Syracuse outshot Clarkson 32-24. Both teams were 1-of-6 on the power play.

Unfortunately, injuries to senior transfer Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, MA) and McGill dampened some of the celebration for the season-opening victory.
