Bianchi Provides Walk Off in Clarkson's 6-5 Win in Liberty League Tournament

Rochester, NY – Sophomore Tommy Bianchi delivered a base hit to left center in the bottom of the ninth, and senior Mike Messier furiously cut the bases after contact to give the Clarkson University Baseball team a 6-5 walk-off victory against RIT in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 22-15 overall, but more importantly the team moves to the winners' bracket where they will face Rochester at 2:00 pm on Friday. RIT (21-17) will be playing tomorrow morning in hopes of extending its season.

With a 2-2 count in the bottom of the ninth, Bianchi sent a base hit to the gap. The key to the play, however, was Messier's tremendous secondary lead and immediate jump on contact, leaving him only about 45 feet from second base before the ball left the infield. He rounded the bags with one idea in mind and slid in at the plate safely to give Clarkson the win.

Although Clarkson scored first, RIT led as late as the sixth inning. The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the second, with one run coming home on a leadoff bomb from Michael Mieczkowski, as the sophomore stayed hot with a solo shot to left center. Mike Nee later scored when he singled, moved up on a wild pitch and then came around on a hit up the middle by Joe Stockman.

RIT responded with four runs in the top of the fourth. Daniel Zeglen hit a one-out homer to left-center and Jason Schultz tripled home Patrick Mylott to tie the game 2-2. Schultz immediately came around on a two-run homer by Joey Mylott, putting the Tigers up 4-2. Clarkson responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Stockman again plated Nee. The freshman catcher led off with a single and then Stockman hit a two-out ground-rule double over the left center wall making it 4-3.

Clarkson tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth as Mieczkowski reached on a walk, stole second and then advanced to third on a ground out to first. Vincent Granuzzo hit the ball deep enough to right to score Mieczkowski, tying the game with a sacrifice fly.

It appeared as if Clarkson had the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. Brad Pearson reached on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then advanced to third on a ground out. Granuzzo again came through this time sending a double to right to allow Pearson to trot home. That run, though, would not be the ultimate blow as Zeglen doubled home Patrick Blackall in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Jake Scurrah came on in relief for Clarkson and worked out of the jam with two modest pop ups and a strikeout.

Bianchi, Nee, and Stockman each contributed two hits and Granuzzo had a pair of runs batted in. Both Nee and Mieczkowski each scored twice. Ryan Riley allowed four earned runs in four frames and Nate Burns gave up a single run in the next four innings. Scurrah picked up the win with his one inning outing.

Stevie Branche went eight innings for the Tigers, striking out six and allowing eight hits. Liam Barry began the inning, and took the loss, giving up two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Zeglen was 3-for-5, leading RIT's 13-hit effort.
