Burns Dazzles, Messier Homers in Clarkson Sweep of SLU

Canton, NY – Junior Nate Burns saved game one and then tossed a complete game in the nightcap as the Clarkson University Baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader against St. Lawrence, winning both contests 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 19-15 overall and 13-7 in the Liberty League, clinching a playoff spot. Clarkson still has an outside chance at winning the regular season title with another sweep and some help from around the league. St. Lawrence dropped to 7-28 and 5-17.

Runs were at a premium in both games as the two teams regularly tossed up zeroes on the scoreboard, but in the first game Clarkson took advantage of several St. Lawrence errors. In the top of the third, Mike Messier reached on a bunt single and Mike Tito then dropped one down only to see the ball thrown away twice, allowing Tito to get to third and Messier to score all the way from first when a throw went into the Clarkson dugout. Tommy Bianchi then doubled just inside the left field line to plate Tito for a 2-0 Clarkson advantage.

St. Lawrence pulled to within one in the bottom of the fourth, but Ryan Riley did a good job of minimizing the damage. After loading the bases on a hit by pitch, single and walk, St. Lawrence could push just the single run across with an infield single as Mike Tito's charge came up short when he lost his footing and did not quite get enough on his throw. Clarkson got the run back in the sixth when Joe Stockman singled on a bunt and moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Messier then lifted a fly ball into the triangle between right, second base and first base, and the ball was dropped, allowing Stockman to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Evan Reichel singled and Taylor Digilio walked to put pressure on Clarkson, but Nate Burns induced a pop up to the catcher near the screen, struck out the next hitter and saw Vincent Granuzzo snag a soft liner to end the game.

Ryan Riley picked up his sixth win with six strikeouts in six innings and Burns earned the save. Alex Black took the loss for St. Lawrence, giving up four hits and three walks but striking out nine in seven innings of work.

Burns returned to start game two and proved just as effective as he was in game one, striking out at least one hitter in all nine innings of work, with multiple strikeouts in four of the frames. However, St. Lawrence touched him for one run in the fourth as Andrew Circelli hit a two-out triple to deep center to put the Saints up 1-0. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Messier reached on a bunt and came around to score when Mike Tito bunted hard to the third baseman, but the ball was thrown away. Tommy Bianchi came up next with a line drive single to right to plate Tito and give Clarkson a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the eight, Clarkson got an insurance run when Messier hit the first pitch of the inning out to deep left field for a 3-1 Golden Knight advantage. The Saints threatened in the bottom of the eight, loading the bases with one out, but Burns wiggled out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

Burns finished with 13 whiffs in the game, giving up six hits and two walks in nine innings. Caleb Clarke took the loss for the Saints, allowing six hits and a walk in eight innings of work. Tommy Bianchi was 4-for-8 in the doubleheader for Clarkson.
