Knights Fall 8-7 to UR, Move to Deciding Game of Liberty League Championship

Rochester, NY – Steadily chipping away after falling behind by six, University of Rochester forced a deciding game in the Liberty League Championship Tournament, as the Clarkson University Baseball team lost its first game of the tournament 8-7 on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.

The two teams play again at 3:05 to decide the conference's automatic bid.

Clarkson rolled out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning as eight straight hitters reached to build a 5-0 lead and then a fielder's choice sent a sixth home. The deficit did not dissuade Rochester's bench, as the Yellowjackets chipped away with two in the bottom of the first, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Rochester took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly and single.

Clarkson picked up a run in the top of the eighth on a head's up play from Mike Tito. With runners on the corners, a groundball was bounced to the second baseman, and Tito held up near the play to cause some confusion. It slowed the play down just enough to allow Tommy Bianchi to beat out the double play attempt and Joe Stockman scored to tie the game 7-7.

The tie was short-lived, however, as Aidan Finch took a 1-1 pitch over the short porch in left-center with a towering drive that cleared the fence by about 20 feet. Clarkson put a runner on in the top of the ninth, but the Yellowjackets wiggled out of the small jam to survive for a second game. Brendan Shamieh relinquished the save opportunity but stuck around for the win, while Nate Burns suffered his first loss of the season.

Brad Pearson went 3-for-5 in the contest while Mike Nee, Mike Tito and Vincent Granuzzo each recorded two hits for Clarkson.
