Clarkson Sweeps Skidmore for Liberty League Playoff Berth

Potsdam, NY – With a pair of one-run victories, the Clarkson University Softball team clinched a playoff spot in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, downing Skidmore College 5-4 and 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 25-13 overall and improved to 9-5 in the Liberty League with the sweep, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 16-20 overall and 4-8 in conference games. Clarkson will join Ithaca College, RPI and University of Rochester in the conference tournament this coming weekend.

In the opener, Skidmore picked up a run in the top of the first as Megan White drew a walk, advanced on a single by Karly Fishkin, and then came home on a double by Hannah Davis. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Clarkson pitcher Olivia Zoeller was able to get out of the jam by inducing a pop up, striking out the next hitter, and then picking up the third out on a fly out to right.

Clarkson responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Raeanna Dunn created the first run all on her own, starting it all when she was hit by a pitch. She then stole second and swiped third as well, and on the latter steal the throw to the base went into the outfield and she came home to tie the game at 1-1. Danielle Whitham immediately followed with a walk and also stole second, moving around the bases on two more groundouts. Later on in the frame, Kayla Robert doubled home a pair with a line drive to right center to put Clarkson up 4-1.

The two teams would be quiet for the next three frames, but Skidmore would rally to tie the game in the fifth. Maddie Nelson opened with a walk, White singled up the middle and Fishkin drove in both with a hit to cut the margin to 4-3. Hannah Davis immediately followed with a double to tie the game at 4-4. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Clarkson would score what would prove to be the winning run. Whitham began with a double and then Liz Caggiano walked to put runners on first and second. Michele Winn grounded back to the pitcher, who attempted to throw Whitham out at third but bounced the throw as all runners were safe. Sarah Vaccaro then singled to plate Whitham and give Clarkson a 5-4 lead, but Skidmore was able to end the Clarkson offense there, escaping the no-out jam without another run.

Zoeller calmed down after the fifth and allowed just one hit in the sixth before setting the side down in order in the seventh for the win. The victory was her 10th of the season as she allowed seven hits and struck out three over seven frames. Vaccaro also finished 3-for-3 at the dish and Dunn was 1-for-3 with three stolen bases.

Game two saw the offense muted further as both teams struggled to push runs across. Clarkson struck first in the bottom of the second. Michele Winn led off with a line drive double off the glove of the Skidmore center fielder and then scored when Kayla Robert singled up the middle and the throw back to the infield was wild. Skidmore tied the game up in the fifth as Hannah Paolucci tripled to left near the tarp and came home on a sacrifice fly, but Clarkson again immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning. Dunn reached on a one-out bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Caggiano singled up the middle to score the grad student and put Clarkson up 2-1.

Senior Sam Mennig was the beneficiary of some solid defense in the seventh, as Kayla Robert ran down a pop up in foul territory and Liz Caggiano went to her knees to snag another pop up. After a single, Mennig took matters in her own hands, striking out the last hitter of the game for her sixth complete game of the year.

Winn and Robert each had two hits in three at bats for the Knights, while Fishkin was 4-for-4 for the Thoroughbreds. Mennig gained her eighth win with seven strong innings, while Emily Popp was the tough-luck loser for Skidmore, giving up two earned runs in six frames.
