Knights Close Out 2019 With Last Second 13-12 Loss at RPI

Troy, NY – A goal with only one second left in regulation by Cooper Urban completed the comeback for Rensselaer as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker, 13-12, in a Liberty League First Round playoff game on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season conclude with a record of 8-8 overall, while Rensselaer, ranked 18th in the USILA Coaches poll, moved to 12-4.

Clarkson led by four midway in the fourth quarter after a goal by Billy Bergan put the Knights up 12-8. The Knights, however, were able to take just one shot in the final eight minutes (a post was hit by Pierce Currie) despite Riley Holzman winning four straight faceoffs. Rensselaer methodically got back into the game down the stretch, scoring at the 7:19 mark and again at 4:31 to pull within two. JP McGrady scored at 3:59, but the Knights won the faceoff and appeared to put a cap on a win when the Engineers lucked out as Currie's shot hit the post. Clarkson picked up the ensuing groundball for another possession but was unable to take another shot.

RPI went to the other end and tied the game with 39 seconds left when Lucas Bastarache found McGrady about 20 feet out for an open shot. With the clock running down late, Will Killeen desperately heaved a pass in front to Cooper Urban and the freshman converted with just one tick left in the game.

Clarkson had led throughout the game, falling behind only briefly in the first quarter after the opening goal. Clarkson scored four times in the final three minutes of the first period to take a 5-3 lead and then maintained at least a two-goal lead until the Engineers scored with 3:59 to go in the game.

The Golden Knights finished with a 43-32 edge in shots and a more modest 25-23 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also won the battle on faceoffs (18-11) and the two teams were virtually even in groundballs (Clarkson 44, Rensselaer 45).

Currie enjoyed one of his better all-around efforts of the season with seven points (four goals, three assists) and four groundballs. Conor Bartlett produced four points on three goals an assist while freshmen Bryan Penney and Billy Bergan also scored two points each, with Penney adding in an assist for a third point. Holzman went 18-for-29 on faceoffs, winning eight cleanly.

For RPI, Bastarache scored five points on two goals and three assists while Urban, Kelly and McGrady each scored three goals, with Urban adding an assist to his total. Quinn Fettig contributed six groundballs and four caused turnovers for the Engineers' defense.
