Slow Start Sends Knights to 14-6 Defeat at Union

Schenectady, NY – Despite getting on the scoreboard first, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team suffered through a lengthy scoreless drought and put itself in a hole from which it could not recover, dropping a 14-6 decision to Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-2 in league plays and 5-4 overall, while the Dutchmen improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will be back at home on Wednesday afternoon when the Golden Knights host Skidmore College in another conference contest.

Senior Marcus Lavarnway got things going for the Knights with a goal just 67 seconds into the game, but that was the last tally for the Green and Gold for the remainder of the half and a good portion of the third quarter, with Union going on an 11-0 run and Clarkson going without a goal for more than 37 minutes. The Dutchmen scored twice late in the first quarter to take the lead and then scored five straight in the second. The Dutchmen added four more on the board until Lavarnway found Bryan Penney at 6:49. Pierce Currie then ripped a shot in at 1:32 for Clarkson'' third goal and Billy Bergan scored early in the fourth at the 14:36 mark.

Those three scores got the Knights back into the game, but the Dutchmen kept Clarkson from making a complete comeback by holding the visitors to five shots (three on goal) in the next nine minutes. Clarkson did pick up a goal in transition at the 5:40 mark by Conor Bartlett, only to see Union halt the momentum 75 seconds later with a goal at the other end, finishing off any real hopes of a Clarkson comeback.

Union finished with a 46-30 edge in shots (26-20 shots on goal), 38-29 lead in groundballs and a .667 winning percentage on faceoffs (16-for-24).

Marcus Lavarnway was the only Clarkson player to record multiple points in the game, picking up a goal and two assists for three points. Bartlett, Bergan, Currie, Penney and Evan Burgett each added a goal. Penney also had six groundballs and two caused turnovers, while defenseman Liam St. Croix and Trevor Borchardt each had two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Kevin Dyckman stopped 12 shots in the Clarkson crease.

For Union, Eric Zimm and Keaton McCann each had two goals and two assists, while John Edmonds and Aidan Flood both contributed three points. Patrick Regan was 7-for-7 on faceoffs and Alex Newhouse went 6-for-9 at the 'x.' Three goalkeepers combined for 14 saves for the Dutchmen.
