Currie and Cioffi Combine for Seven Goals in 14-6 Win Over Brockport

Brockport, NY – Junior Pierce Currie scored five points overall and classmate Tanner Cioffi recorded four goals as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team continued an early offensive hot streak with a 14-6 victory over Brockport on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 with the victory while Brockport opens its season at 0-1. Clarkson will get another home game on Tuesday as its away game against Plattsburgh has been rescheduled for Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson's 36 goals in the first two contests of the 2019 season are the most that the Green and Gold have scored to start a season since 1991, when the team posted 39 goals in the opening two games.

It did not appear as if the Knights would be challenging any school marks in the first quarter as the team found the back of the net just once in the first 14 minutes against the Golden Eagles. However, two goals in the final minute jumpstarted the team's offense as the Knights rattled off seven straight scores. Cioffi scored from Marcus Lavarnway with 54 seconds left in the first quarter, and Shane Kilday barely beat the clock with an unassisted goal with four seconds remaining in the opening period. However, Kilday scored 47 seconds into the second quarter when Brockport was whistled for a penalty. Just a few seconds after that goal, Clarkson was called for an infraction, but the deficit of one player did little to slow the Knights down as Conor Bartlett found Anthony DiGiovanni at the 13:00 mark, scoring down a player. The Knights scored three more to close out the quarter to gain an 8-2 lead, but Brockport briefly ended the roll with a goal from Billy Coppola at 1:11.

Clarkson trailed in shots (17-15), groundballs (11-4) and faceoffs (10-2) in the first half, but the Knights made sure their attempts counted with eight goals on only 15 shots.

The Knights kept Brockport quiet in the third quarter and doubled up the Golden Eagles in the frame thanks to goals from Cioffi and Bartlett, but the first three goals of the fourth quarter really put the game away as Currie scored twice around a Kilday goal to clinch the win for Clarkson.

Cioffi scored four times and Currie added three goals and two assists to lead the Knights. Bartlett also chipped in four points on two goals and two assists and Lavarnway matched the four-point effort with a goal and three assists. Kilday also scored three times and Trevor Borchardt led the team defensively with three caused turnovers. For Brockport, Coppola scored three times and added three groundballs and Patrick Sheridan found the net twice for two goals. Ethan Stiles led the team at the 'x' going 15-for-21 on faceoffs.

Clarkson sophomore Kevin Dyckman made eight saves for the Knights while John Clancy and John Felice combined for nine saves for Brockport. Clarkson finished with a 30-28 edge in shots, though Brockport did end up with a 20-13 lead in groundballs and a 16-6 edge on faceoffs.
