Higgins Scores 29 In Loss to SLU

Potsdam, NY – Two sizable runs turned an otherwise tight game into an easy win for St. Lawrence as the Saints went on a 16-0 run late in the second half to gain an 88-65 win over the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team on Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 4-16 overall and 3-10 in Liberty League play, while the Saints stuck in first place at 15-6 and 12-2. Clarkson closes out the home portion of its schedule this weekend with games against Ithaca College and Union College.

Following a layup from Liam Ellis at the 7:35 mark, Clarkson found itself down by just seven (67-60). However, that basket turned out to be the last gasp for the Knights as the Saints rattled off 16 straight points over the next five minutes to build their advantage to 23, which turned out to be the final margin.

The Saints used two unanswered double-digit scoring runs to gain separation from the Knights in the first half. With the game tied at 13-13 six minutes into the game, St. Lawrence rattled off 11 straight, capped by a Riley Naclerio layup and free throw at the 10:42 mark. Clarkson pulled back to within seven only to see the Saints score 13 straight in a four-minute stretch for a 20-point advantage (45-25).

While the Knights trailed by 17 points at the half, Clarkson shot well at the start of the second period, quickly trimming the Saints advantage to single figures when Liam Ellis converted a short jumper at the 14:06 mark. Although St. Lawrence pushed its lead to 14 at the 10:00 mark of the second half, another Ellis layup two and a half minutes later got Clarkson to within seven. Clarkson was quiet for the next five minutes and St. Lawrence took advantage, scoring 16 straight, finished off by a 3-pointer from Luke Hicks at the 2:46 mark.

Matt Higgins came within one point of his career-high, scoring 29 points on 9-for-17 shooting, including a 6-for-11 stretch from the 3-point line, while adding in eight rebounds. Freshman Reese Swedberg was the only other player in double digits, scoring 11 points to go along with six rebounds.

St. Lawrence scored 28 points off 19 Clarkson turnovers, and shot 56.6% from the floor (30-for-53). Luke Hicks recorded a team-best 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting and Riley Naclerio chipped in 13 points. Ben Crawford also shot 5-for-7 from the field for 12 points.
