Knights Fall 72-48 Versus Tigers

Potsdam, NY – A 28-point third quarter by the opposition turned a reasonably close game into 20-plus point gap as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 72-48 decision to RIT Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in Liberty League contests with the defeat, while RIT improved to 12-6 and 7-4. Clarkson will host William Smith on Saturday afternoon.

RIT scored 28 points in its third quarter run, pushing a 12-point halftime lead to more than 20 in the opening minutes of the period and then stretching the advantage late in the quarter.

The Tigers opened the game up with four makes on their first six shots, including three layups, in the first two and a half minutes to take an 8-0 lead. The advantage swelled to 11 points before the Knights got 3-pointers from Molly Stewart and Maddie Pratt to jumpstart the Clarkson offense. Even with that offensive burst, the Knights still trailed by six at the end of the quarter. RIT returned the lead to 11 early in the second when Sabrina Wolfe got inside for a layup and was fouled, pushing the score to 22-11. Although Carly Assimon hit a 3-pointer at the other end to reduce the margin to single digits, RIT spent most of the period up by more than 10, ending the half with a 34-22 lead. RIT shot 15-for-27 and Clarkson was only 8-for-29 in the opening 20 minutes.

After Tara Lynch hit a pair of free throws at 8:20, the Tigers led 42-22 in the third quarter. Though Clarkson again cut into the deficit slightly with some shots from the perimeter, pulling to within 14 points at the 6:00 mark, RIT's Cori Okada was able to cut through the Clarkson defense for some layups and short jumpers. The Tigers went on an 11-2 run after Clarkson's 3-pointer at the 6:00 mark and never led by fewer than 20 for the remainder of the game.

Molly Stewart finished with a team-best 15 points and Assimon and Kati Gotch each scored eight points for the Knights. For RIT, Sabrina Wolfe finished with a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor, while Cori Okada scored 20 points on 10-for-13 shooting. The Tigers starters combined for 65 of the team's 72 points.
