Late Game Scoring Slump Sends Knights to 65-61 Loss

Potsdam, NY – Despite forcing 31 turnovers, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team could not muster quite enough offense to get by RIT, as the Golden Knights came up on the short end of a 65-61 decision Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-14 overall and 3-8 in Liberty League contests, while the Tigers edged up to 5-13 and 2-9. Clarkson takes on Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing for most of the final moments of the game, RIT got a key play Marcell Davis in the last minute of the contest, as the senior converted a layup and free throw to put the Tigers up by one (62-61). Clarkson was unable to score on its next two possessions and the Tigers hit three free throws in the final 25 seconds to hold off the Knights' charge.

The Knights opened the game with a 3-pointer but then followed with 11 straight misses in the next five minutes. Fortunately for Clarkson, RIT wasn't shooting much better as neither team eclipsed double digits until almost eight minutes had expired from the clock. RIT slowly edged out to a five-point lead (20-15), but the Knights began to employ heavier pressure on the ball and the Tigers struggled to handle it. Between back picks, swarming pressure and jumping passing lanes, Clarkson forced RIT to commit 16 turnovers in the first half. The tactic worked as Clarkson was able to catch the Tigers late in the half and went ahead on a Matt Higgins layup and free throw in the final minute.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Tigers coughed up the ball 15 more times. However, the Tigers made the most of their chances when they did push the ball up the court, shooting 68.4% over the final 20 minutes (13-for-19). That healthy shooting percentage kept RIT up in the first half of the second period, but Clarkson went on a 9-2 run, capped by a Matthew Hornak 3-pointer at the 8:08 mark, to put the Knights up 54-51. Clarkson was up 61-57 at the 2:04 mark when Joe Lucas hit a baseline jumper, but those were the last points that the Knights would score. Will Atkinson hit a pair of free throws to get the Tigers within two, and Marcell Davis's 3-point play with 54 seconds left gave the Tigers the lead. At the other end, Matt Higgins saw his mid-range jumper fall short and Hornak's 3-pointer from the corner rattled in and out with 15 seconds to go. That was enough for the Tigers, as the visitors made three shots from the free throw line down the stretch to earn a four-point win.

The Tigers committed 31 turnovers in the game, with Clarkson gaining 20 steals, but RIT shot 55.8% (24-for-43) in the contest. The Knights made just eight of their 42 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and shot only 31.9% (22-for-69) overall. RIT held a 44-26 edge on the glass.

Jason Phelps played well for the Knights, scoring 11 points with 7 rebounds and 6 steals, while Hornak had a team-best 12 points. Both Higgins and Lucas also tossed in 10 points for Clarkson. For RIT, Marcell Davis contributed a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds and Cobey Adekanbi had 11 points and eight rebounds. Will Atkinson (14 points) and Jaymee Rosser (13 points) also finished in double figures.
